Gateway / Nvidia

Hi, this is my first post here.

I have a gateway DX4870-UB20P brand new out of the box. I also happen to have an old MSI nVidia GeForce 7900GS 256MB 2DVI/HDTV PCI Express Video Card.

I'm thinking about putting it in the new gateway and wondered if it would be an upgrade or a downgrade for this system. And if anyone knows of any gateway/nvidia preformence issues between the two?

I almost surely doubt that your PSU has enough juice to push that card. Card is also pretty old. If you really want an upgrade I'd advise buying a new PSU and Graphics card.

Edit: Your computer needs 400watts for that card and only has 300. You'd probably take out your whole system in a puff of smoke if you tried it.

What's the brand? Even if it's a crappy brand it would still probably be okay since you have so much headroom. Card isn't the greatest but it would be better than integrated. Keep in mind you'll be limited to DirectX 9.

I have to wonder. If I drop this card and power supply into this computer, should I add any extra fans to help with the cooling? If so where can I even put a fan in a case with a vented side panel?

Going by photos I've seen of the machine on Google, the fans would literally screw onto the side panel and either plug directly into the power supply using a molex connector or into your motherboard using a 3-pin header. Looks like you can install two of them.

With that card I probably wouldn't bother unless the temperatures are high. Does the case have any fans in it (other than the CPU cooler) at the moment?

If you can get some fans to go on the side panel then, or maybe an intake fan in the front if the case allows.
