Gddr 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

well, GDDR is an acronym for Graphics Double Data Rate memory. also known as RAM, or Random Access Memory.

gddr1 is any speed from 1-400mhz usually. ddr2 is usually limited to 400-1200mhz. ddr3 is anywhere from 1066-2000mhz i believe.

basically they are just numbers that show you what general speed the ram is operating at. more technically, the ddr number refers to the architecture used in the chip. so no ddr1 ram will fit in with any ddr2 ram slots.

if you are wondering because you are looking into buying and want to know if nvidia video cards are slower because they use ddr3 and AMD/ATI uses ddr5, then the fact is, so many other things affect the actual processing power of the video card that as long as the card uses ddr3 or higher, then you dont need to worry about the memory. the best thing to worry about is the core processor.

so this is how it works. gddr was the first type of memory for gfx cards. then, along came nvidia and made "gddr2" which is not the same as ddr2. "gddr2" overheated alot and had flaws. "gddr3", replaced "gddr2". "gddr3" is similar to ddr2. "gddr4" and "gddr5" are the successors of all the others. "gddr5" is the latest.

basicly, its similar but not the same as desktop ddr memory. each new number is an increase in technology. its an interesting read on wikipedia.

As said, it's simply memory for graphics cards (stands for Graphics Double Data Rate). AFAIK there has never been a particular type of memory called GDDR.

GDDR2 was used during the GeForce FX era; AFAIK it wasn't truly DDR, and it was expensive, hot, not too good, and it's now long obsolete.

When compared to normal RAM for computers, GDDR memory usually aims for high bandwidth and latency is less of a concern. They also include features that can increase performance in 3D rendering scenarios that normal RAM lacks.
