Geek Squad and Motherboard

My dad's computer has been having trouble recently so we took it to Best Buy and the Geek Squad there. Not the best idea, we realize now, but we had them run a diagnostic and they told it was the motherboard. That didn't make much sense to us, it booted up fine and could get to the desktop if it didn't freeze, so we called a friend of ours in the computer business. He said that it was spyware and viruses and the such. Spyware no, because we have protection against that and run it regularly, but the when we try to run the virus program the computer shuts itself down. We ot an error code one time, but I can't make any sense of it. The guy at the computer store looked at it like it was greek or something.. Anyway, here's the error message:

BCCode: 100000d1 BCP1: FFB80574 BCP2: 000000FF BCP3: 00000000 BCP4: FFB80574 OSVER: 5_1_2600 SP: 2_0 Product: 768_1

Help?

If the fan has stopped working then it would overheat, causing it to shut down during operations (it would shut down particularly fast during CPU intesive tasks). If it isn't the fan, however, I'd start looking towards viruses as possible suspects.

do you have a centrino? sometimes service pack 2 doesn't like the wireless drivers windows has and it gives the blue screen and reboots. does the computer boot up fine in safemode?

The event logs may shed some light on the subject. Note at what time the computer shuts down. Reboot and look at the system and application event logs for red X's. Tell us whats going on. Also, if your virus scanner is corrupt or you suspect malware, run through the online virus scanners from the sticky, instead of the one installed on your machine.
