geforce 250 GTS still good?

A friends video card broke and he bought a new one before realizing that he could still send it back for a replacement. They send him a new geforce 250 GTS.

I have a gforce 7800GT. I'm not really willing to spend the money on a current high end card. I'm wondering if I should buy the 250GTS from him. Would it be a substancial upgrade? Will I be able to play all games that are out now

(my monitors native resolution is 1680x1050 but I'm willing to play games at lower resolutions to keep the game playing smoothly)

how much should I pay for a 250 GTS?

Thanks for the info and suggestions. I'll see if he'll sell it to me for ~70

I have an almost new 500W OCZ power supply
(manufactured by impervio, which from what I read online is a good PSU manufacturer)

A gts250 is a very well matched video card to 1680x1050, you'll be able to play pretty much any game. What CPU and motherboard do you have?

Great power supply, everything should work fine.

It's still quite good as a general/first time card. but it will probably leave you wanting more now that DirectX11 games are around. Maybe the 5770 is more suiting in this situation.

Or perhaps the GTX 460 1GB, but that's more expensive.

The newer models are definatley the way to go. I just picked up the EVGA 240gt, this comes with nvidia precision gpu and memory controller/monitor which is pretty cool. I have turned mine up to test its overclocking abilities but since it will already reaching its temp limits at default setting I do not run it like that. Even though my card came with 1 gig of memory it is one of the lower end models. I don't have much to compare it to besides the in-board video that came on my pc, which it blows out of the water. I downloaded and ran nvidias medussa demo which was pretty cool. For everything I have used it for half life -2 and flight simulator it was doing just fine. I will be running starcraft 2 with it shortly and I would be surprised if it wasn't enough to handle that game.

I have heard that some of these cards are manufactured the same but sold as different models depending on how they perform in the quality checks. I have a feeling the gt and maybe even the gts line from the 200 series are sold like this.

^yup with a 55nm vs. the 9800gtx's 65nm if i remember correctly.

Its good, i max out any game at 1650/1050, the game i cant max out is crysis, i can go on the highest settings on everything, but i cant AA, lol kills my fps.
