Geforce 6600 GT Problems

Hmmmm.... I am not sure what happend... But I have a problem, In windows THe video card totally works great... but I think something to do with the 3d rendering Engine inside the chip or something cuz the 2d looks fine... but when I run any 3d game, HL2, UT2004, BF2... all those... the graphics and just messed... I took a screen shot So maybe this will help I am sure someone else has had this problem...

I think you should provide a working link first. As well as that, I would bet that you are facing either driver/direct X problems but more likely overheat problems resulting in artefacts and such things.

agreed, update drivers and directx
what kind of ventalatio do you get, does the problem persist if you remove the side panel
 
I have Updated the Drivers... and DirectX... It seems weird that Windows Platform is working and looking great... but when I start and game... I get the glitchy look on the screen... STRANGE!

HELP! any other ideas.
 
open up your case and stick a big ass fan on it, see if that helps, if not, try coolbits, change the clock info and maybe it will trigger something in the card?

The games stresses your GPU which then produces way more heat, hence these visual artifacts.


Is the card overclocked?
What working temp do you have inside your case?

Also many of these nVidia cards have heat problems due to bad heat sinks.

The 2 6600GT's i used had fine tunning temps, and my current one hasnt gone over 55°c, even when playign cs:s for 4 hours straight

Agreed, ive not had issues with any 66GTs specifically but they are known (possibly in a more generica way), to have less than ideal cooling capacity ... not because the HSF is poor or the card plain being hot but because the HSF doesnt always maintain stable contact (i.e., wobbly-sink)

Well I have the Nvidias 77.77

and the Directx9.0c

so you guys are saying that it could be just my card is over heating... that is the main problem then...

man never had the problem before...

and the make is MSI

I don't wanna stress you out or anything but my friend had a 6600GT from MSI as well and had to return it because his card would constantly overheat and result in the same problems you are facing. As master P said, the contact between the GPU and the HSF. My Asus 6600GT had a problem with that as well. I had to install an aftermarket fan and now all is good.

oh, well the card i have is a xfx, and i cant remember the other make. neither of them have overheated, but there was good case ventilation.

well in my experience (as with few others ive dealt with), MSI 6600gt PCIe ones (the AGP model has the hsi to add some stability) has some wobbly-sink issues... try popping the card out and, using your finger, see if the heatsink is stably on the card :)

yeah for sure... usually the problem occurs straight-out-of-the-box so its quickly noticeable but sometimes i guess it can result afterwards...

does the 6800gt has the same problem with a loose heatsink?

no because its mounted down using (at least) 4 connectors (while the 66gt is mounted using only two)

neither of them have overheated, but there was good case ventilation.

yeah ive not seen many issues with 66gt/xfx ones but then again if the heatsink is wobbly, no amount of case ventilation will save you

@atthedrivein
fire up rivatuner (dont have the link handy but there is one in the QUESTIONS 101) and use the temperature monitoring/logging and post us back the idle and load temps.
