Geforce 6800GT SLI Vs. Geforce 7800GTX

I am in the market for a new video card and I am making the jump from ATI to Nvidia in hopes of newer and better things. I'm a college kid, and I play a ton of high intensity games, i.e. Farcry, Doom3, F.E.A.R., Quake 4 (you get the idea) and I want a card that is better than my current Radeon 9800PRO and will last me a few years to come so I wont have to drop this much money anytime too soon. I was looking at the Geforce 6800GT and the 7800GTX and I wondered which would be better in a gaming setup, the 7800GTX - or two 6800GTs running in SLI. I run an Athlon 64 3200+ processor with 1 Gb Kingston Ultra ram (512 x 2) and will be upgrading the power supply to somwhere in the range of 550-650 watts when I make the switch so power shouldnt be a problem. Any thoughts would be awesome!

Thanks

i would definetly get the 7800 gtx it will run games at all high settings and should last 3+ years for high intensity games while the 6800 gt will only last 2 years for high intensity games then you will have to run the games in lower settings

I would go with the 7800GTX so in the future you can buy another 7800GTX when more demanding games come out.

i had 2 6800GTS in SLI and i loved them! NOW THEY ARE GONE! DAM WATER COOLING!!!!!

but yea go with a 7800gtx

" runs away and cries!"

Looks like I'll be going with the 7800 - cool.

Next issue is what am I going to do with my socket 754 mobo which doesn't do the whole PCI-Express x16 thing (kicks self). More bad news being that the only motherboard I've found that will accomodate the 754 with express is made by some random company I've never heard of... the reviews are decent but I'm not prepared to base a system on them to find it doesn't have some of the features I want or it breaks in a few months. I generally use Asus stuff and I'm very leery about switching since I've had such great luck with them in the past.

So it looks like I'm going to have to throw down for a new processor and motherboard to go with the graphics card and psu.... this is starting to look like a brand new computer... (kicks self harder). I'll have to deal.

So thanks for the advice, and if anyone is looking for a slightly used AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with an Asus K8-Delux mobo and an ATI Radeon 9800 PRO graphics card, believe me I'm listening. I'll throw in Thermaltake Volcano and Arctic Cooling Heatsinks, a PCI graphics card fan, Arctic Silver 5, and a ton of spare parts I've got lying around from when I built it 6 months ago.

Once again thanks a bunch for the advice.

and where is your proof of this? there i really no way to know for sure, but i guess your theory is right. you never know........two 6800gt's might be good for 5 more years.:)

Yes a 78GTX.

Heh no way.
On the other hand some people still enjoys their TNT2 Ultras and GeForce256 cards. ;)

The fact is, one 68GT is easily choked today using certain games.

How much?

Well look at that! The things you miss sometimes... I didn't think Asus made a 754 mobo with PCI-Express - apparently I just didn't look hard enough. This will let me upgrade in pieces instead of all at once, which is nice.

Thanks

Well oddly enough, I paid about $140 each for the mobo, processor, and graphics card, give or take $10. With the heat sinks and other misc. stuff thrown in it was pretty close to $500 so I don't think ~$380 would be out of line as an asking price, considering the equipment hasn't been used very much and never overclocked (I just don't believe in it). Of course there is a bit of leeway in the price so let me know if you are interested.

Hehehe chances both of them will ahve to play games on low in 1 to 1 1/2 years...

Well I don't know about Low ;). But this is more accurate then people saying opposite. Perhaps medium in many games a year from now. Lets not forget that many Doom3 engine games are going to come out within the next couple of years the the 6 series excels with that engine. Also Half Life 2 engine games play nicely on it. Sadly though they are not the only engines out there and games like F.E.A.R. are making the 6800GT work. I play the Game with the right mix if Medium and high settings to make the game looks great yet slow down still shows. I don't doubt the 6800GT will be playing games a couple years from now but I doubt it will be at enjoyable enough Frame rates to keep me happy.

Yes I cam across that when I was considering upgrading my 6800GT to the 7800GTX. I've decided awhile ago to wait till the next cards are released to worry about that.
