geforce 6800gt/ultra or ati x850xt pe

6800GT, an x850 is a waste of money. The 850 is only something like 25MHz faster than an x800XT
 
Why would you get an ATI card when you have an SLI motherboard? As of right now Ati doesn't support SLI so I would ge the 6800gt and then when you need it get a second one.
 
should I get a geforce 6800gt/ultra for my sli board or ati x850xt pe the fastest card ever created help

The X850XT PE might be the fastest card ever but that doesnt mean it will perform the best. And uh ... do you really have to ask?

SLI really isn't worth the money you're going to spend on it for the boost you get. It's better than when 3DFX tried it but still not worth it. If you wait a few years they will most likey have perfected the technology to a point where it WILL be worth the amount of money you spend for the increase you get.

As already mentioned speed isn't everything. But why bother to ask when you seem to have your mind made up?
And don't post random numbers, link to the source you've got the numbers from.

If so then perhaps the question should not have been asked but since it was then I'm going with the Nvidia if not just simply because it's available.

I would go with the geforce 6800 ultra because A) you have a SLI board which I have no clue why you got if you had your mind set on ati B) x850 $690 while the geforce 6800 ultra only cost $439. You wont convince me that the x850 is 33% better then the geforce and that how big a difference the price is.

Not really in a game like doom 3 the geforce 6800 ultra still performs better then the x850XT. In most other games the x850XT has a 1-5fps lead not so big. If having the best was really nessary then the geforce 6800 GT SLI blows away the x850xt in ever high resoultion benchmark and what the point of getting such a high end card if you not playing in high resouloution.

Eh? You get ~1.85x the performance ... which is pretty good considering dual-card negotiation overhead. Granted the cards are expensive but its not like you're looking at a 10% improvement or something

1. Just like the AMD/Intel debate, clock speed does not mean everything
2. With respect to Doom3 (since I dont give a crap for HL2), having a X850XT PE (which boarderline costs twice as much as a 6800GT and almost 1.5x the 6800U), wont mean crap since um.... the game is locked at ... um... 60fps. But if you're so intent on doing benchmarks and not actually playing the game ..... I guess.

2. Magazines are full of crap and tend to cater to a specific mindset. Also do realize that, unlike an online forum or somthing, a magazine TELLS you WHAT to think and only considers points that enhance that perspective. On a forum, guess what: both perspective are entertained.

*shrug* Ever since the 9800s, ATi hasnt been able to deliver any of their top-end cards worth crap (quantity wise).

but over in the uk the ati card is only £50 more not much of a dif realy for better proformance

Ya well over here in Canada the 6800U can be had for $460CAD; those interested in an X850 can talk to the loan/mortage officers.
