Geforce 7800GTX Cooling

Hi everybody

I have a bit of a problem with my 7800GTX.
Sometimes it hits 95 deegrees Celcius under Full Load (F.E.A.R.) I also tried overclocking it the other day, and it got so hot (100 deegrees) that the computer restarted. That scared me a bit, and I would be very disappointed to throw away a 650$ Graphics Card in half a year because of high temperatures. So I was thinking about buying a new cooler for it, but really don't know much about cooling. So I just wanted to ask you.

I have a Leadtek 7800 GTX, and need a new cooler.
I have looked at the Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 Rev. 3 but don't know if it's any good. Any other suggestions?

Come on, doesn't anybody have a clue about this???

A simple bump would have done. Seems most people are getting cranky these days because they feel they are not getting an answer fast enough.

Well first off if your getting high temperatures at regular clock speed then it's just silly to overclock as you should guess it'll overheat. Secondly why do you need to overclock a 7800GTX?

Now I've not looked at that cooler to see if it fits the 7800GTX but I assume you have? If so then yea its a decent cooler. I've heard lots of good things about them for the 6800's etc.

Edit:

I just looked and yea they work on the 7800GTX, Yes they are a decent coolers that I know of but I don't have personal experience nor do I know anyone who has. Hit the ol google and check it out further if you like but I "Think" its a fairly safe bet.

the first thing you should check is the airflow in your case.
the cooler on the 6800GT/ULTRA and 7800 series are build so the hot air is blown towards the front of the case. so, make shure the hot air can exit the case in the bottom front of the case. maybe a exhaust Fan there would be a good idea

the first thing that you NEED to check is you sences, trying to overclock a 7800gtx is for nothing other than bragging rights

There are a few things that happen when a NV4x card overheats:
1. It throttles itself. This occurs at t>115
2. The buzzer will go off
In most cases, the throttling is more than sufficient to handle the heat. Your system retsarting at t=100C is a sign of a problem elsewhere (probably PSU)

For the most part the NV47s run cooler than the NV40s ... but something like a NVSilencer5Rev2 will work for the NV47s :)

You ever try playing FEAR 1600x1200 settings at max + softshadows (without SLI)? :P (granted its an "out-there" case but one nonetheless)

Hi

First some answers:

I haven't overclocked just to get bragging rights. Although I'm not much og admitting it, I think my 7800GTX is performing poor, compared to what I thought it would do. When I play F.E.A.R. I can only run it in 1024 x 768. Althoug it's with everything max, unless Soft Shadows, I still think this is bad compared to the reviews I saw, before buying it. I don't really understand.
Plus, having these high temperatures isn't making the situation better. I've seen people with the same graphics card have temperatures about 20 degrees lower than mine, with a bundle cooler too. I remember that I touched the sticky paste on the bottom of the cooler when I installed. It was only a very light touch, but do you think this could have anything to do with it. Is anybody else having these experiences with the Leadtek version of the 7800GTX?

And, thank you very much for the answers. Nice. And, tell me what is a bump?

Well your running a 3500+ and a gig of Ram, alot of reviews use like a FX-55 and 2 gigs of RAM, so you have to make sure you read the benchmark rigs specs.

well.. Fear fully uses 1Gb of RAM, so you may want to check if you have anything running in the background ;)

tell me what is a bump?

A bump is when you simply take a thread and place it near the top by posting in it. Usualy someone will post with a "Bump" as the text message.

hmm

yea, if you touch the thermal paste it'll DEFINITELY make a difference in how cool it gets. oil from your hands might be blocking thermal conductance. buy some silver 5 and fix it, or id suggest a zalman air cooler. specifically the fatal1ty cooler if you plan on overclocking (for bragging rights, of course... but who wouldnt go with SLI if thats what theyre going for?)
in fact, 95 celsius is insane. im surprised it'll take temps that high and not get damaged. also, 95 celsius will cut your video cards like into 1/2 or even 1/4 what its life could be.
the 7800gtx also uses 130nm process tech. this makes it MUCH hotter.

Although both you and i know (right?) that it doesnt matter all that much. My CeleronD 1GB 7800GT can play at max. :)

damn, what is your processor clocked at? i have a celeron based desktop, but didnt think it would be worth the money to get a descent gpu. you may have changed my mind:)

Doesnt matter ... the game is GPU bound and a 7800GT is more than able to handle 1280x1024 (or if you've not edited the files, 1280x960) at max settings (soft shadows aside naturally).

As for CPUs, people often apply the famous marketing technique of "talk without knowing" and the other one "follow da phool" ... sure a Athlon64FX is gonna be better but it dont bloody matter all that much if your general hardware is classed well enough
