GeForce 7900GS vs. 8600GT for my needs.

I would like to get your opinion on which of these two cards, or
any others around $120, you would recommend for someone who
likes to play games but also does a lot of basic camcorder/
picture and video downloading/editting and other general use.
The Foxconn 7900GS is 256 bit, but for close to the same price,
I could get an XFX 8600GT (128 bit) that many have liked on the NewEgg
user reviews as well. What are the advantages of these two platforms?
Thank you for any advise. John

That is what I was starting to understand after a lot of reading. I think for my system
and needs that one may be the one to go with. I have seen it recommended on this
forum, but not compared with an 8600 series card. I don't think that I really need the
added features of that platform as I am not a high end gamer, I just want good all
around performance.

DirectX 10 only works on Vista with DirectX 10 games, if your running XP and not planning to upgrade to Vista soon the 7900GS will be the better performer, plus I dont know how well a 8600GT would do in DirectX 10 games anyway, low in 8 series card.

"Other Thoughts: Honestly, it'd be a better choice to get a superior X1950GT or 7900GS over an 8600GT since it's not very likely that the 8600s will do too well in DX10 games.
5 out of 5 people found this review helpful. Did you?

I would not even pee on this if it was on fire

Pros: none, the only pro i can think of is that newegg. com gave me a RMA
Cons: only lasted 1 day. Crashed every time i ran a game, then if that was not bad enough, it could not even preform basic task, like keeping my desktop the same color. My screen looked like a sand box of pixels.
Other Thoughts: It said it was tested and made for Vista, that was a load of bull, not only could it not run on vista, the drivers that came in the box were made for XP. Even with Nvidias unified drivers, the card dint work."

The 8600GTS looked pretty good there, but the GT-thanks, but no thanks:D

THe 8600gts is on par with the 7900gs, plus it has DX10 support, and uses less power. You can't go wrong with it on a budget. The Dx10 is just whipped cream, stick it on anything, it may not aways be the best combination, but it's free! Take what you can get.

I hear ya Hermeslyre. I thought about that as well. I probably should have been
looking at those as well but I didn't know that there were any in that price range.
I thank all you guys for chiming in. The pursuit of the gear is half the fun of building
your own. So many options is why I asked for help. It was hard just to narrow it down.
You should have seen/heard myself and two other dudes talking at Fry's Electronics
this last weekend. I mean every one of us would be holding a box of some video card
type and then 2 minutes later, swapping for another until we all tried to settle on
something. It was sort of ridiculous. I know you have all been there!

The 8600GTS is closer to the 7900GS, but overall the 7900GS is still a faster card, if you want a better card save up some more money and get a 8800GT.
