GeForce FX5500

I recently got the Nvidia GeForce FX5500 OC. When I was playing Need For Speed Underground and Halo: Combat Evolved, the game kept freezing evey 5-10 seconds. Does anyone know how I can stop the game(s) from doing that? I have tried to lower the settings and that didn't help. :(

CPU Overheating?

Why would my CPU be overheating? I didn't overclock it. Nvidia overclocked my graphics card. It's FX5500OC. But I dunno. I'm confused.

Are you useing updated drivers? have you used a utility like driver cleaner to make sure there where no old drivers on your system?

They should be new drivers because I got them directly from Nvidia.com, and no I have not checked if they were old drivers.

Graphics card

I lowered it to the stock settings. Well, Nvidia overclocked it to 290MHz and i believe that the regular FX5500 is 270MHz. But I did lower it to the factory settings. I called Nvidia and they told me to download the latest drivers and update the BIOS on my motherboard. I said ok. I have also noticed that on every single game I play, the MAX fps i can get is 60. It's really strange. But, yeah. I couldn't find the Bios Driver for my motherboard. I have an HP Pavilion a620n.

Hi,

Do you mean freezing then restarting? ie stuttering? Rather than freezing full stop? One cause of this could be too many other programs running in the background on your comp - even though you've got a 3200+! try ctrl + alt + del and shut down all unnecessary programs and see if that helps.....

And of course check that there's not alot of spyware on your system. clean it up if you havent done so and give it a defrag.

Tried Everything

I have tried everything. Although, I did forget to disable and uninstall my Integrated Video. I did the whole install on my FX5500 over again. I went to Best Buy and I got the same card. Nvidia told me to take it back and get a new one. I did that, and it's lagging. I shouldn't say freezing. I checked for spyware, i had like 3 things. I use Spybot Search and Destroy which i got from www.download.com. In Halo: Combat Evolved, i'm getting about 15-20 FPS on 800x600 res. Same with Need For Speed Underground. On EVERY game it lags on. I have service two. I have all of the latest drivers for my system and the latest driver for my video card. I've tried everything and I guess that there isnt much that I can do. Although the people at nvidia told me to do a fresh install on Windows XP. I have so much stuff on here. I have a 160GB HD and im using like 50GB's. I have a dvd burner and dvd-r's but i dont want to waste them on backing things up. But I think that's what im gonn have to do. Becuase nothing else is working. If anyone has a suggestions, please post them. Thanks.

I'll just mention, Spybot is a great program and it's free as you know :) but it does not clean all spyware off of your computer... I use spybot and Ad-Aware becuase one will pick up stuff the other dont.

sorry I know I should not double post like this, it would prob. be easier for you to partition your HD and backup on the new partition and then reinstal windows leaving your backup untouched.

I think that I have figured out what the problem was. I forgot to install my chipet drivers. After I did that, I went to play Need For Speed Underground. On 800x600, I got about 60FPS. It was stuttering a bit though. When I changed it from 800x60 tp 1024x768, the frame-rate dropped from 60 to 30. Then, it would stutter and go up to 60FPS. Then it would stutter again and go back down to 30FPS. So now I have no idea what to do. But the chipset driver did help though.

What's your power supply? I also would seriously try to reinstal windows if you have'nt already.

I'm not familier with that card does it need to be plugged into the power supply? if so then maybe try plugging it into it's own rail.

LoL. No, it doesnt require power. Like.. it doesnt have anything hooked up to it besides the agp slot. I have installed everything else. Service Pack 2 comes with the latest Direct X drivers. I have sound. =L All the video drivers are installed. I have a 250W power supply. I tried ubplugging my CD-rom and dvd-rw from the power and it lagged the same. But yeah, I dunno. I'm so confused. The guys at the store and at Nvidia said that it shouldnt lag at all. The card doesnt lag AT ALL playing Unreal Tourtament 2004.

You dont have v-sync or AntiAlaising (sp?) on in the game do you? those can kill a card. turn off any kind of AA feature, and lower buffering rate in game. At desktop adjust videocard settings to lowest, and then try the game out. helps me ALOT in splinter cell with my older card.
