You do not have to pay over $100. I paid $85 for an OEM copy of SP1. SP2 can be had even cheaper, in the $75-80 range.

Besides an OEM buy for a good price these days if you have exceeded the amount of times you have reactivated Windows within a certain period or feel that your copy is not genuine MS you can go to the activation page and read the instructions for purchasing a license for your current copy of Windows. That will cost less then buying an installation disk.

If you get an OEM with only Service Pack 1 you can easily grab the full 266mb SP2 redistributable download at http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Windows-XP-SP2-RTM.shtml What is nice about that is if there is ever a need to reinstall Windows you can already have this saved to a folder on the drive if not on a cd-r/rw instead of the lllllllllooonng... wait(especially on dialup) to finish another download of it. But for the low cost of XP with SP2 included in the OEM package get it for $82.99 at http://www.viosoftware.com/Windows+....html?osCsid=e9ead9c1909f33ca2fab25c8e2c48af5

Presently, I can't use SP2 due to some known software issues... but I can still download it for the future using a DL manager, and save it with a burn. So it takes a few days on dialup. I'm in no hurry. Thanks for the URL :D

there is a way around it if you have another copy of a genuine windows xp. or if you are in college they may provide it for cheap. i got my xp pro sp2 + x64 for 20usd shipped. :D

When you are in a school part of the cost is absorbed by the Dept. of Education. Usually you can find a good price in the student stores if you are enrolled or know someone attending to buy it for you. Even online the price has fallen on a full version with SP2 included. In just a few weeks time the price for XP Home with SP2 dropped from $95- down to $88.58 seen at http://www.ewiz.com/query.php?categry=588&s=xp+home+with+sp2+oem&Go+Search!.x=41&Go+Search!.y=13

As far as issues with SP2 one method used here with a fresh install with an SP1 disk is to install SP2 prior to installing anything else. Some say you have to put it on after everything is set up. Funny everything seems to work just fine with no worry of having to update to it afterwards. With Vista right around the corner the prices for XP will drop along with the release of SP3 that will include the full version of IE 7.0. I'm having a party trying to remove the beta2 to reinstall 6.0 until the full version comes out. When you start the beta up you have to wait for your home page due to a save settings page that DOESN'T save any! (^#(@^*# @^&#@@$#**@@#&^@@# )

The problem running the IE 7 beta is trying to uninstall it when a folder gets moved or deleted by accident. I don't want to have to perform a repair install just to fix a browser. I can easily run FireFox instead. That certainly won't pick up all of the adware crap being seen in the last few months.

The look and performance of IE 7 rivals FireFox however. When you open a link you no longer have to close out an extra window. You simply click on the "X" on the explorer bar to return to page you were previously viewing. But get used to the smaller icons instead of large button for different things.

the problem i have with IE7 is when something is tryingto close a window dialog. can't seem to find the option to turn it off. pretty annoying.

Are you talking about the annoying "thank you for choosing Internet Explorer 7" page when IE is first opened? When you go to set the anti-phishing filter, region, and save settings you then see the next page with the error message stating there was a save settings error. As soon as it finishes loading you also have the two options at the bottom of the first page for going directly to your home page. Why bother? I just hit the home page icon on the task bar. At least you don't have to put up with that gunk with FireFox.

no, i was launching a game and it ask me if i want to close this ie window cuz an application is trying to close it. it doesnt happen with ie6 only with ie7.

And of course you are running the beta 2 version I trust. If you can revert back to IE 6.0 fully do it. There seems to be some big glitches with the beta version. Someone else recently asked for help in removing the beta release. Unfortunately I'm still stuck with the nuisance here unless I perform a repair install. Fortunately FireFox gives you no headaches in that regard. Thunderbird was also a good substitute for Outlook except for the option to have it only open one single window without the folder bar.
