Get new laptop now or wait - Vista vs XP???

My Dell Inspiron 8200 is old and beat up (about 5 years old). I am in need of a new machine. It seems as though it is hard to find much good news about Vista and that is what is holding up my decision. I was hoping that once that SP1 is released (whenever that may be) I might be a little bit more likely to go ahead and make a move. I am worried about many of the reviews that I have read about Vista and incompatible software. So what should I do......try to get a machine with Vista and wait for SP1 or try to get a new machine with XP? If I get one with XP then I am worried that in a year or two all of the bugs in Vista will be worked out and XP will be obsolete, but if I get Vista I am worried that I will have some of the issues that many of the reviews mention. Thanks for any help.

go with vista, i have been happy with it so far

i recommend xp, dont u think u can upgrade later? besides, wait till the vista service pack 2 is released. then consider upgrading to vista

I agree with luckyed. I have a notebook with vista on it and I have no problems. Granted I have 2 GB of RAM, so if indeed you do buy a laptop with vista on it, make sure you have at least 1gb RAM, if not 2. But as far as looks go. I have not seen much better with vista. Everything is clear, crisp and nice. I don't play too many graphically intense games now that I'm in college but I could play CS:S at max settings with a good frame rate (doesn't say much cus CS:S is "old"). Get to know Vista early, its going to be around for awhile I think.
