Hi all, i'm building a bar for my basement and wiring a car stereo into it. I'm using a power supply out of a old computer i had laying around, question is, i cant get 12v out of any power lines, i got 5v out of a purple wire and 3v out of a green wire, looking to get 12v out of the yellow wire but i cant get, i heard its switched through the motherboard, any ideas how to make this work???

The 5V from the purple wire is only standby power. To turn the PSU on you have to short the green (power on) to ground (any of the black wires). This should give you 12V from the yellow wires, 3.3V from the orange wires, and 5V from the red wires. I’m not sure how well that will work for a stereo especially if it’s an old PSU with low power from the 12V lines. I’d be interested to see how it works.

You can also get a switch and plug them into a green and a black wire on the 20 pin ATX connector of the psu, then you can turn it on / off by the button
