Getting a router

Guys
My speedtouch USB modem is playing up and I've decided to get a router, but I know nothing about it. I will buy a wired router and I have an ethernet port on the back of the computer. Is this where it connects ?

If so should'nt the ethernet card show in Device manager? as I cannot see it.

Talk me through it please :)

To make sure your NIC is installed and working, go to the "Network Connections" page under Control Panel. If you are sure you have a NIC installed but it doesn't show up, you may just need to install the drivers.

All you will need to do in order to setup a router is connect the modem to the router's "Internet" port via an ethernet cable, and then connect your PC and any others you want to have internet connectivity to the router's "LAN" ports via ethernet.

Thanks for replying [-OMEGA-]

Eventually after trying to find new hardware and not being successful it gave me a choice and "Ethernet card" was one of them. It installed the drivers for what I believe to be my card "Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000 Base T controller #2", but then tells me "This device cannot start" code 10.

It now shows in Device manager under "Network Adaptors" along with my Speedtouch Modem. It has the Yellow exclamation mark next to it, I assume that is because nothing is connected at the moment. Would this be right? :)

That is probably the reason, or it is manually disabled because you aren't using it. Does it show up in the Network Connections page as being disabled?

It doesn't show up in the Network connections page, only my speedtouch modem

Sometimes you need to reboot in order for the driver to get fully installed. If when you reboot and it still don't show up then the driver install didn't work correctly. You might want to try downloading the driver either off the manufacturers website or the motherboard makers website if its an onboard network card.

If your computer is pre-built, go to the manufacturers website and download the driver for your network card, or if you built it yourself go to the motherboard manufacturers website.

whenever device manager shows that little exclamation mark, there's a problem with the device in some way. It recognizes that the device is there, but is unable to properly use it for some reason. it could be that the device is bad or that the driver is missing, Corrupt, or Wrong. as has been suggested, go to the motherboard or computer manufacturer's website, locate the correct LAN drivers, and download them. If you just can't get the onboard to work, you can get a cheap NIC at Wal-Mart for $20 or less.

Thanks guys
It seems that the drivers installed OK but the onboard LAN was dead  Anyways I went and bought a PCI interface card and everything installed OK with it showing in Device Manager as enabled and ready to go. :)
Connected everything up to the new router and the lines up and running.

Thanks for staying with me on this one.
