Getting pictures off of a non-functioning computer

Alright we have an old computer that no longer functions. It stopped working. We think that it stopped working because of non-hardrive related issues. The RAM has been removed etc. The problem is that we need some of the files on this computer.

Is there any way that we could access that hardrive by means of another computer?

The old computer is a Dell Dimension 8200. We have another 8200, at our disposal (MUST REMAIN WORKING) as well as a E521 (ALSO MUST REMAIN WORKING).

Any tips are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If it's an IDE drive simply put it in slave and boot Windows, then you can take the files you want off it. If it's SATA just plug it in and start Windows.

If all else fails, try major recovery: take the platter out of one and put it into another. I want to try that. The only thing is, you need 2 of the same hdd which shouldn't be a problem.

And you would need the cleanest room and anti-static. So unless you have a lab in your house I wouldnt suggest that!! Plus the chances that it would work are very low!! Plus, how would that help getting the pics onto another pc? Duh!! There is nothing wrong with the hdd he has now!!

Alright, it worked. Just took the drive out of the old box, changed it to a slave drive, and jumpered in the new box to the other drive. Worked beautifully! Thanks!

On a side note, are all boxes set up as messy as dells?
Lol, thanks again.

Nope! It's just dell. LOL The only thing messy on my HP was the crappy stock psu with all the wires just hanging down.

Yeah I used the same recovery technique on my dad's HDD when his PSU blew up, and Dells use a different form factor to most PC's so the layout is different.
