Getting the Specific Codec You Need

This is intended for anyone who is missing a specific codec, needed to play a certain media format but not sure which.

Step 1 - Download the GSpot Codec Tool and install the program.

Step 2 - Open it. Select File | Open and select your AVI file (I'm using avi as an example here). What you may have to do is select the appropriate file, click properties and copy/paste the path name into the relevant.

Step 3 - Look for the FourCC code for the file's Video Codec.

Step 4 - Visit the FourCC website and find out who develops that codec.

Step 5 - You can now go to that developers website to download your codec. You can also visit the Codec section of wmplugins.

Note: Do not download anything labeled as a “Codec Pack” or from the links at the top of the FourCC website. This will help you stay out of trouble when playing your files.


If you have the correct codec installed and the video still doesn't play download the GSpot Codec Tool and run your AVI though the program as described above. If you see Failed to render, Missing Chuck or anything along the lines of that your AVI is corrupt. There is little you can do to play your file in Windows Media Player.

Often when you are not able to get a specific codec you simply run a different player due to WMP's limitations. Some of the plugins at this site are appropiate for certain file types however. AVI is a common file type. If you go to the Visualizations page as I suspect others will do note that G-Force is not a free download but shareware to point out that error found. http://www.wmplugins.com/ItemList.aspx?typeid=2

It works perfectly fine for me.
 
It should work without issues. But the listing shows it as a freebie not shareware. Someone made a goof there. The visuals and WM Player skins download direct from Microsoft after clicking on the "I Agree" link. That can save a little time browsing the MS pages for each item.

I see your point. But the whole purpose of the G-Spot program is to identify which codec is needed for a specific file, and whether it is missing from your comp or not.

Then thats when you refer to the above.
 
The other link is for the visuals not the G-Spot program. That was already downloaded and saved sometime back. This isn't the first time running across this site when WMP wouldn't play a file type. But it does have some interesting items to look over along with the utility you mention. It's still a good reference to have. :)
