getting traffic to forum/website

My cousin is wants to start his own phpBB forum,How would he go about getting traffic to it?

i know submit to search engines but they never realy get any traffic?

yeah when i had my forum it almost completely consisted of CF members hahah

it showed up on google. but only one guy joined that way... word of mouth is usually the best way in the beginning

I was modding on couple of forums, I remember how we got us popularity.
I google bombed couple of great sites/forums and those lead to our forum when googled for it

Also, we've been using some ad-clickers that would click on AdSense links...also raises popularity and brings google the money.

But the best I could do was to put the links to the forums on every forum and website I ever joined

you can also try advertising on other sites RELATED to your forum... that usually gets a couple interested people to sign up

im not talking about other forums, other websites related to the same subject
(ie.) asking the owner of a sports website to advertise your new sports forum

well the way to get it on google is to have the site posted on a web site. google scans websites and then if there is a link it goes to that link. thats how it finds your website so i would put links up and then google will find it
