hey im just about to put together my build so here is my question. we have a router at my house and it is conneceted to my brothers pc upstairs. im setting mine up in my room downstairs and am wondering if there is a wireless device i can plug into usb or somthing so i can connect to the net without any wires? thanks!!!

Absolutely, you can get a PCI, PCI-E, or USB wireless card to connect to your wireless network.

lol, sorry i have no idea. but im buying a house within the year, so i will be getting a differnt internet then. so il need somthing that will work for both, the one at my house now is bell sympatico

It sounds like you don't even have a wireless network, if that's the case you will need to buy a wireless router and a wireless card, I would recommend going with 802.11n since it will be all from scratch.

If he does have wirelss I'm pretty sure it's g, as most (non-enthusiast) people couldn't be bothered with n, and g is the default (as far as I know).

If by "default" you mean the most common, then yes, most people use 802.11g since it's been around for quite some time and has huge advantages over 802.11b.

setting wireless up

We have bought a wireless netgear.Because we all have computer/laptops in my home. The problem is we cant get the wireless working so i have had to but alll leads from the computer to the netgear modem. Can someone tell me how to set it up?We have tried and tried.without fail.Someone told me netgear can take over my computer and do it all from there side.Is this correct?

first ask your bro if the router has wireless support. if it does then buy a device. an N compatible adaptor (usb/pci/pci1x) should be cheap now. the airlink is around 20 bucks at frys. if you go for pci/pci1x make sure you have an empty slot in the pc

if your bro encrypted the wifi then you'll need to ask for the password. if he used mac address filtering you'll need to ask him to add your mac address to the list or disable mac address altogether
