Why don't you read the manual? There are like 100s of different ways of making an image, if if this is just for "back up" purposes then read the quickstart guide.

Heck, even google for a guide, I bet there are probably a ton out there.

I never make a single image file of my HDD.Because if that image file gets damaged just a little, you can say GOODBYE to your cloned HDD or just a backup of certain files or whatever you were doing...I would rather copy entire HDD to some other removable storage device or another partition on the same HDD using Linux Ubuntu operating system. It's free and simple lol.On that way you will have the copy of everything just like on the computer you are using and if ANY of the files gets damaged, you can always repair them MUCH MORE EASILY then if EVERYTHING is in ONE SINGLE IMAGE FILE lol xD :D Ok there ARE ways to even repair that single image file, but its a nightmare lol xD

Cheers!

How do you damage an image file? I create one image for thousands of machines at work and have never once had an image go bad.

In most cases the image wont go bad.But if a virus damages your files then you are in bad luck. Now watch this...to me it was even worse. Many many months ago I made an image file of my entire HDD which is whole C: partition. After the image was finished, few weeks later, the damn NTLDR disappeared.I could fix that easily, but I decided to rather return my image file back so I can see how it works and after the process of returning the image file was finished,Windows did not boot.It showed BUNCH of missing files.First it was HAL.DLL.I repaired that, then it was NTDETECT.COM.I repaired that too. Then it were few DLL files and in the end it was NTLDR lol.I repaired that too,but then AGAIN I had the NTLDR error. No matter how I repair that file,it simply says it's not there. The reason was because somewhere in the Windows registry it was written like NTLDR is not there, when it actually is.Since that moment I was SURE that the image file was bad.Now watch this.A week later I made a test and made the image file again on the SAME WAY as the last time,I returned that image file back and it worked like charm.LoL!!!

So yeah it can happen. It happens in 1% cases and I guess I was that 1% that day.Thank God I had my HDD cloned with Linux Ubuntu so I didn't lose anything.:D Damn I hate when these things happen to me lol xD It drives me crazy AAAAAAAA xD xD xD!!!!!!

Image files by nature are read only, how would a virus affect it? A lot of times when creating Windows images, especially in the XP era, you need to use an application called Sysprep which takes all those config files out and rebuilds them on first boot. This is because when you created your image, for lack of a better term, you imaged all your "junk" files into your image file most likely. Which can cause issues.
