Ghosting a HDD

my cd drive died on my HP laptop, and before they will replace it under warranty they are requiring me to do a System Restore, which will wipe all of my data :mad::mad:. this pisses me off tremendously. anyhow, i know the restore wont help anything, so i would like to ghost my system HDD to an external and then replace it after i do the stupidass Sys restore. does anyone know of a program that will copy the full content of my hard drive, partitions and all? secondly, will this work? i cant think of any reason why not, as long as no data is lost.

If you have Vista Ultimate edition you can use the Complete PC backup option which makes a disk image that you can use for a full hard drive reload from the Windows Vista Ultimate DVD boot menu. Vista's regular edition File Backup only does user documents, etc.

unfortunately i only have home premium, so that wont help me. good to know though

thank for the advice, all. my brother told me they use DriveImage XML at work, and thats what I used. So far so good, I have it copied over to another HDD and im waiting for phase two. im thinking about taking this oppertunity to upgrade my HDD(s) (see my other post in this section).

Very nice. How long did it take to create the cloned drive from the image?

about 2.5 hours for 80GB of data :( the only reason that i mounted the image on my current drive was to play Battlefield 2 with some friends. if it wasnt for that, i would have waited and mounted it on my new HDD. oh well, at least i know it works :D:D:D
