Gigabyte 965P has automatic overclocking? C.I.A2???

I was getting ready to overclock my CPU when I noticed something in the BIOS. My Gigabyte has a feature called CIA2 or CPU Intelligent Accelerator 2. In the manual it says there are 5 different levels. It also says what each level does. IT says:

Level 1: Automatically increase CPU frequency 5%,7% by CPU loading.

as you move up to each level the frequency increases untill you get to level 5 where it say "Automatically increase CPU frequency 17%,19% by CPU loading".

Well what is this feature? Is it an automatic overclock? If so does it adjust the vcore and all that to keep your system stable? Does it overclock the RAM and GPU too? Anyone know?

Yes, it's automagic overclocking. It overclocks the RAM because it adjusts the FSB, video should be unaffected. I don't think it adjusts vcore, it shouldn't increase it so much that it is necessary.

So if I choose level 5 (the 17%,19% overclocked) option I still wont be getting everything I can get from this computer? As in thats not overclocked enough?

Well, you decide what is enough. It is your hardware so however far you want to push it is up to you. E6400s have been known to run at upwards of 400MHz FSB though.

Not necessarily on stock cooling. If you were to go that far I'd get an aftermarket cooler for the CPU and at least a fan on the northbridge, the heatsink they have on the 965s is on the small side.

3.2 ghz. with the stock cooler?

Yup. You can do that. I have my E6300 running @ 3.2 Ghz at the minute with the stock cooler.

However, Cromewell is definately right about Northbridge cooling. I have placed an 80mm fan on top of my graphics card with little blue tac feet, so it's blowing cool air right over it.

If you want help for which to overclock, just ask. You are going to want to raise the MCH voltage by +.1v to get overclocks it excess of ~2.8 Ghz.

Rambo.

P.S. Make sure you update to the latest BIOS too - F7 is the current one. F8 will be released in the next week or two I think. http://tw.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=2314

What is MCH? Are you refering to the vcore? Did you use the CIA2 to OC? Because I am thinking of maxing out the CIA2 first and seeing how that goes.

MCH is the memory controller hub aka north bridge. MCH has a voltage setting in the MIB section (ctrl f1 unlock needed).

No I did not use C.I.A.2, since I don't trust it with my hardware. I would rather overclock everything myself, since then I know what it being overclocked, and by how much.

Honestly at his tech level...I think teh best thing for him to do is to do the level 5 overclock (brings his 2Ghz E6400 to 2.4Ghz, perfectly safe), and let him hang around on the boards till he feels confident enough to go about the whole overclocking manually thing. As he reads, he will learn what the differnet parts are, and what their relationships are. I've never had a system to overclock (yet), but I feel confident that I will do great when I do my next build in the next few months. I've read enough, understand enough, and grasp it to the point that I will be able to massage the computer to a fairly good overclock, hardware permitting.

I agree, the auto overclock is probably the best option until you are comfortable but I don't like automagically overclocking when the system is underload. I think theres an overclock profile option in MIB where you can have it at x % permanently.

I don't see a problem, really. It's similar to ASUS's AI NOS setup where it bumps the FSB to give the system a boost under loaded conditions. Although I'd rather do as you, and have a perm. overclock, you don't really need the extra power till you're, well, loaded down. :)

I talked to Gigabyte and they suggest I OC manually. They said that the CIA2 overclockes the CPU, RAM and PCI-E front bus. Also I tried it last night and it worked at first. But when I restarted the computer I got the black screen of death. However unplugging the computer for awhile gave me the ability to boot the BIOS and disable the CIA2.

You don't need it off very long. You can either pull the battery and unplug it for about 5 min or use the CMOS reset jumper.

It's probably because it's upping the PCI-E Bus up too much. But I'm not sure on that one. Anyway - I would recommend you read the OC 101, and then try your hand at manual overclocking.
