Gigabyte X58 UD3R and PCI-e soundcard

Will I be able to use a PCI-e x1 soundcard with this motherboard? It looks like it might be to close to the heatsink that says Gigabyte on it. I have been using a PCI sound card but the I can not get my usb network adapter to work since reinstallion of Windows so I have to use the PCI network adapter instead of the sound card unless I can get the usb adapter working.

I know some of you are going to say use onboard sound. Honestly I do not care for onboard sound at all. It sounds so much better with the sound card.

The manual says (on page 7) that the top PCI-E x1 slot can only be used for short cards and that the other slots should be used for longer cards. And I've read elsewhere that you're supposed to be able to install x1, x4 and x8 cards in x16 slots. Haven't tried it myself though.

Yeah I knew I couldn't use the top one for a long card. Even the second one looks like it is to close to the blue heatsink.

I didn't think about installing it in one of the x16 slots. Can anybody confirm if this is true or not?

As long as a PCIe card will physically fit into the slot, it'll work. Doesn't have to be the same size as the slot. :)

Actually, if you cut the back out of it, you can even fit a PCIe x4 or x8 card into an x1 slot and it will function. Probably with reduced functionality, though.

A PCI card won't work in any PCI-E slot. Different standards. But the X58A-UD3R does have a PCI slot.

That is what I figured. I have 2 PCI cards, network adapter and a sound card and only 1 PCI slot. I was using a usb adapter but can't get it working since re installation of Windows. When I bought this motherboard, I didn't realize it only had 1 PCI slot, that was my stupidity. I just assumed most boards had more than 1 PCI slot.

I think I am going to run a wire directly to the router so I can quit using the network adapter and use my sound card.
