Give it to me straight Doc......

My CPU fan began making a distinct, aduible 'whurring' noise this morning..... My guess is that it's on its last legs but, roughly, how long do I have before I absoulutely need a new fan......

The doctor is in the house. OK, time for a diagnosis. First off, the facts. How old is the fan? What type of bearing is it? (Ex: sleeve, ball, dual ball, etc)

Just fill out the form below called "quick reply" and I'll get back to you in a moment.

It shouldn't be bad. check your temps and see if they have gotten any hotter than normal.

Pretty typical for fans to start giving out. You can sometimes spray something like WD-40 in them and make them last a little longer, but best to just toss them and get something new.

Yeah, right, he is just dying to spray WD-40 in his computer.....NICE! When it is shot, it is shot, don't fix stuff like that, it will become a constant problem. Sometimes dust will get in between the inside ring of the fan and between that little space between the case of the fan and if you live in a moisturous place, it will cause a whirring sound. Throw it out the door and try to squeeze a 9500 in that thing.

Well, I should have explained further that after awhile, the 'whurring' noise would stop which probably meant the bearing were getting dry. So some dusting and a few careful sprays of WD-40 actually did the trick. Better than having to spend $50 on a new cooler......

my tower makes a whirring sound when first fired up and stops after about 10- 15 seconds, i thought it was the fan needing attention but when i fitted the same mobo (make and model) into my fiancee's tower, she had the same thing so i assume it's something to do with the "cool'n'quiet" technology firing up the fan full speed then once readings are taken from mobo sensors, slows down to a slower minimum to cool the system.

......... i may be wrong

Microchipper, if it only last for a 10-15 minutes, it probably mean that your bearings are dry-ish and need to 'warm up'...... A few careful shots of WD-40 will fix that......

CarmPeddler, I hope mine lasts that long, hoping it does oxidize by then......

i'm sure i said 10-15 seconds ?

This could very well be the case. The fan starts at full speed when the system is booting up to protect the processor. Happens with my computer too.

oops, ya that's what i meant........ I'm not so good with time........

Sadly, I'm occasionally getting the noise again. I think you're correct with the C'n'Q answer as C'n'Q is a driver in the operating system, (I could be wrong....). But i think the "whiring' noises we are hearing are two different ones because my fan is always running at a constant 12v. (I think it's a defective mobo.) Your 'whiring' noise may be that it's running at 12v momentarily while mine is probably a much louder, 'grating' sound.
