Glued heat sink

I know this is going to sound rather odd, but what do you think the chances are that someone glues a heat sink onto the processor? Yes you read that.....GLUED!

The reason why I ask is because I just took my mobo out and I went to take off the heat sink and fan to put one with more power on. Well to my surprise the damn heat sink would not bugde an inch. So I checked the metal tabs to make sure they didnt get reconnected, but they were still off, so then I pulled and tried twisting it, but STILL NOTHING!!!!! So I even tried to pry it off with a screw driver and STILL NOTHING! Anyone have any ideas what the hell kind of paste this is? Now just a bit of back ground, I got this and 5 other PC's for free from Radioshack because whenever a customer brings something in for repair they have 3 months to get it before they can be sold off. Well these had been sitting there for 2 YEARS!!! So I asked my DM if I coudl take them and he said yes so I got 5 WORKING desktops FREE :) So I have no Idea if some monkey thought Gorilla glue was thermal paste.

the thermal paste does look d'same as glue, if its glue you can use a 70% alcohol that might dissolve the glue, if its superglue try acetone.

a wet processor is not a problem.

It's probably thermal epoxy. It's generally considered permanent but you can try acetone, it'll take forever.

Wet electronics in general are fine as long as you let them dry before turning on.

I glued a heatsync to a processor once :P Hehe, but as Cromewell said, it's probably thermal epoxy. Enough workingshould break it loose.

Have you pulled the processor out of the socket? I know you can sometimes do that with older sockets with less pins, but it might cause a problem if it's a newer one.

I have tried everything with it. I have taken it acl on it and still NOTHING. I really have to wonder if it is Gorilla glue, that stuff does not come off for anything

tried hitting it with a hammer? ( No.. im not joking,.. )
I assume is a alluminium heatsink? it would try to hit it with a hammer a few times, from the side that is,.. that could create enough movement to crack the glue/epoxy.
and wich hit it,.. i dont mean slam your motherboard in half ofcourse.. ;)

I would get a plastic box slighty larger than the heatsink, and fill, say, halfway (or more/less, depending on heatsink and box) with acetone. Turn board upside down, and place the sink into the sea of acetone (might need some more boxes to support the corners of board and stop it tipping over).

Leave overnight, and see if it comes off. If it at least moves a bit, you're getting somewhere.

Remember, not much acetone is needed if a tight-fitting box is found, as the sink will just displace the acetone.

My friend Halian had a Socket 939 AMD processor with the stock heatsink and thermal compound on it. We were replacing his heatsink, and when pulled on his old heatsink, the processor came right out with the heatsink. I used a qtip as cushioning between the heatsink base and the processor base, and pressed on it with a screwdriver. It took a good deal of force, but it came off.
