I was given a computer to look at but it's not doing much of anything for me :rolleyes: When I boot it up, this Norton/Gateway goback junk comes up. My room mate has a newer copy on his computer and it's given us all grades of problems, so I already didn't like it...

Anyway, just as it starts, it says something about corrupt data on drive #1(only has one drive, so C: ) It only says to press OK for it to try and correct it, but after that it just locks up. Mouse will move, but nothing else, no HD activity or anything(waited a good 10 minutes) I tried again but this time tried to get into the setup/configuration dealy for Goback, but I got the same error.

Does anyone know a way around this? I tried finding info online about it, like to disable Goback, but you have to press space and go through it's little setup(which I apparently can't access...) I'm beginning to suspect a bad drive...

Oh yeah, and formatting this drive is not an option.
 
oh god I HATE GO BACK!

I have had my unfun shares with go back. There is a way to disable it and uninstall it, and it will take everything off (go back wise) the system.

You have to hold down space bar at boot to access go back menu, disable it, then uninstall it via control panels > Add/Remove Programs in windows.

If you can't access that menu does it at least boot into windows? Or even like safe mode? If it boots in safe mode there is a good chance to get this running otherwise you may have to change permissions of the folders via command line, toss the drive into a known good comptuer, copy the data over, then wipe and reload and copy data back.

Holding down space or just tapping it, I get the same error.

Realize, Goback starts before windows, so you can't get to the boot menu or anything.

I know I can get to the drive otherwise(I'd use bartsPE) but I'm trying to avoid this because my grandma has so many pics on it...
 
boot off a win xp cd and try repairing it via recovery console.

or toss the drive in another system and try to access your grandma's pics that way. Getting a back up would be a good step in the right direction. I assume your Grandma has no back ups...

another option would be to overlay windows. That could ultimately fix the problem, but you run the risk of making the problem worse.

what happens when you boot up holding the shift key down?
 
It runs ME, not XP :-/

Again, I don't want to even try to access the pictures because it's too easy to miss one.

When I hold shift down, it just starts clicking. It starts trying to do something in GoBack, but then the "Corruption has been detected..." crap comes up.

Another solution. Boot off a DOS disk since ME still uses DOS as a main part of its OS.

at the command prompt type in this command

select a previous date, best you can guess, that was a known good configuration and reboot

what happens?

What kind of clicking, like the HD clicks?
 
ok im going to jump in the middle of this and offer a last resort option just in case none of this ends up working out. Buy an external HDD case so you can access the drive through USB and another computer. Save the data you need as i assume this is why you don't want to reformat. Then reformat. haha.

o ya and norton is awesome
