Going back to Quad Core.

Hey guys.

I used to have a Q6600 @ 3.6GHz. Now have a E5200 @ 3.6GHz, obviously now have a FPS drop due to the bottleneck.

I've heard Q8200's are bad overclockers.
I have 6GB of RAM (2x1GB+2x2GB) that will not do anything over 400MHz (ish) Different brands etc.

I need a Quad with a high multi because of that reason.

I like to play my games at 1920 x 1200 4AA/16AF if possible.

I have either the option of buying a 4GB kit of PC8500 and a quad with low multi (Q8xxxx)

OR

Get a quad with high multi & stick with my current 6GB of ram.

I can pick Up a Q8200 & 4GB of PC8500 for £135. Which I doubt will get me very far OC wise?

I could alternatively pick up a Q6700 for £135. 10 Multi is good for my 400FSB.

Can someone give me some approximate clocks of a Q6700? I use a TRUE in push/pull.

What would you guys do?

Get some faster, less capacity ram with a smaller die, slower quad with less chance of an OC, whilst at the same time having a 10% advantage clock for clock because of the chip size.

or

Stick with my 6GB of slower ram, pick up a Q6700 with a high multi and try my best with it?

What is the best option?

I'm more inclined to go with the Q67 right now.

BTW. Q67 over Q66 as the Q67 is now cheaper.

Stepping will be G0.
Reviews on the page, one guy has his at stock VCORE 3GHz.
Others on increased voltage have 3.4-3.9GHz stable.

Fans for a TRUE. Mine are unequal, I did have equal fans (some enermax's, 70CFM @ 18dB.) Until one broke, now I have unequal fans, pressure and speeds.

What are the best fans for a TRUE? Bomberboysk did mention some in another thread but I can't find it right now. I know I need certain fans because of the way the TRUE is orientated.

In your situation id go for the Q6700...i think you will get a better overclock....also to mention that the Q6600-6700 HAS double the l2 cache of the Q8200.

I honestly dont know wht you sold your Q6600 in the first place :P,I love mine.

Headphones man!

I spent £140 on some AKG's that I thought were gonna be awesome! Didn't know I had to have an amp. Sold them on for something like £80 :confused: :o :D

Anyway, thats the past :P

I would at £13 extra. BUT.

Q9400 has a multi of 8x.

Max I can achieve OC wise is 8 x 400MHz. (ish) (3.2GHz)

Take in to account the die shrink and we're talking 3.5GHz when compared to a 65nm counterpart.

That is pretty much the low average of a Q6700 on decent air cooling.

Going out on the Q9400 I'd be loosing cache, £13 & maybe some overclockability.

I have been thinking over this for soem time, which is why I think the Q6700 is the best choice :cool:

That is next on my upgrade list :D I can still get away with it with many of my games :)

Is there any comparisons to show the difference between a Q9400 @ 3.2GHz & a Q6700 @ 3.5GHz?

For me the Q67 is still slightly edging it
 
Been looking over the multi's of all the 45nm chips.

Cheapest one I can go with for without spending ANY more money is the Q8200, get some decent ram for it, but it would still struggle to OC. I've heard maybe 1 or 2 people get it over 3.2GHz.

I think for the price, and potential, the higher cache, and known overclockability makes me say. I'm going to buy a Q6700! :)

I know its old tech, last, or, 2 generations old, but it's still a powerfull cpu! So It'll do me fine, for now at least :) I'm also happy with the price I payed for it.

Beats the £350 I spent on a Q6600 a few years back!

The Q6-Q7 are great processors,still they blast through anything as you know.

let me know how that overclocking goes.:)

3GHz Stock VCORE of 1.28v

Gonna go check OC's of this vid now and max 24/7 vcore. :cool:
 


Decided to enable LLC (Load line Calibration) to lessen the vdroop.

3.2GHz on stock VCORE, 1.26v with LLC on.



Next im going for 3.5GHz @ 1.325v.

Good stuff mate..ive got to overclock mine again,i somehow managed to reset the bios and lost all my oc settings :cool: :D

whats your voltages at now for 3ghz?...i know its diffrent for each system but just for a rough idea.

im heading back for 3.4-3.5....this time il overclock my ram with it.
 
3GHz is 1.28v (Stock)

For me I need 1.4v to get for 3.5GHz. That's acceptable. My temps are a little high right now though, I think I have a concave cpu.

I'm gonna pick up some AS5 and get some new fans for my true, ones that work properly with the heatsink, if that doesnt work I'll order a lapping kit (£5.99) for my TRUE and the cpu.

TDP is 71c for my chip.

I've hit 70 during Priming, gaming is between 50/60.
