Going fan-less with a P4 2.8 Prescott?

Are you sure you can get it fanless? I'm almost sure that every heatsink needs a fan, and it looks like there's mounts on the sides for one. But you can get really cheap, silent fans for like $4 (80mm). Just go to newegg.com. If you're looking for silence, maybe you should go water cooling, but they sell really quiet fans now, especially if you don't care about power. Hope I can help

I wouldn't mind really quiet fans. I just want my computer to sound like your average HP, or vaio PC.

As for those $4 silent fans, are they the CPU fans, or case fans? I'll take a look.

water-cooling would be outta my budget.

wow, my computer is SO loud.

Personally I wouldn't trust passive heatsinks, but yeah you can get really quiet heatsinks plus fans - personally I would recommend Zalman if you can handle a few extra bucks. The one you are looking at is advertised as passive, so I don't believe you could attach a fan to it.

Quality case fans are usually a lot cheaper than quality heatsinks - it your heatsink the loudest part of your case?

Yup... altho this heatsink is best for a 1U server case or something where the heat-sink rests on top of the CPU. This heatsink is about 1.5lbs of copper... it's heavy, and goes beyound the recommended weight load of your motherboard... that's why they recommend it's for a 1U case... and not an upright tower. May be interesting.. of course, you may require some sort of air-flow over it and it will run hotter than average.

You could also consider something like a Thermalright XP120 and a stupdily-quiet Panaflo :)
