Going from 2xHDD to 1HDD + 1SSD - Need Info

Hey CF peeps,

My dad just picked up a SSD and would like to use it for Win7 + programs (tax programs, anti-virus, office, etc). He currently uses two HDD, 1 for everything and the other just as a backup for all his files.

I kind of have an idea of what to do but, it got a little confusing when we were discussing what he needs to do. Not sure if I'm 100% correct but, from I gather he should be doing this:

1. Transfer all required files to his backup (formatted no OS)
2. Unplug both HDD
3. Plug in SSD, install Win 7.
4. Plug in the main HDD that he was using and reformat (giving it to my brother)
5. Plug in his backup HDD, setup all his downloads and everything to go to his HDD instead of his SSD.

Is this the correct way? I got a little confused when I was thinking if he should be using his main HDD instead of the backup one.

So - 1SSD + Current Main HDD with OS on it ... or .. 1SSD + Backup HDD with no OS?

It doesn't really matter. Either way he has to install a new OS onto the SSD and move some files back and forth. Personally I would move all the files he needs to the backup drive and then reformat the current main OS drive. Then install a new copy of the OS onto the SSD. After that map all downloads, documents, music, videos etc onto the backup drive. Also make sure to disable system restore and automatic defrag for the SSD.
 
Hmm so my dad has just informed me that most of his tax stuff carry a key and he doesn't know where the original cds are. So will I be able to just drag and drop all the program files and pray that they will work?

While I'm on this topic, will that work for any program or will all programs require a fresh install on the SSD? Thanks.

The programs will most likely require a fresh install. Some may work, some may not. It's safer to reinstall everything.
 
You could probably uninstall everything he doesn't need from the HDD, then clone the HDD onto the SSD, leaving the programs and registry intact.
 
Will cloning have any negative effects on the SSD? I heard it's best to do a fresh install and tweak everything rather than image things over. Would be awesome if it doesn't. More info plz :P!
 
Id recommend a fresh install if your going to an SSD because if you just clone all the stuff from your HDD all the files are going to be all over the place and possibly slow down the ssd.

Fresh install!
