Going online via W-LAN with 2 PCs

Hi people,

I´ve got a question which can hopefully/probably be answered easily. :)

The Problem is that my friend and me use the same W-LAN-Router to go online and that I have very low connection and many discs, while he has the full "connection-power" and no problems at all.

Therefore I want to know if I can do something to make the both of us to have equal "connection-power".

Thank you and sincerely yours, isildur.

Is the router a "G" router? if so, do you have a "G" card? And how close are you and your friend to the router?

What does "G" mean?
We´ve got a normal W-LAN router which is sold by default with a new DSL-connection-contract. My friend as well as me have about 5 metres air-line distance to the router. And we both use the same USB-stick (by d-link, 11 mbit) to connect the PC with the router.

Well, what i mean by "G" is 802.11g, if your not sure if your W-LAN has this, then i would check it it's manual. If it is 802.11g, consider buying a new 802.11g wireless usb stick.

THe problem is that we both have about the same distance to the router and about the same PC-power and exactly the same USB-stick to connect to the router, while my friend has a very good connection and nearly never discs, while I have a very abd connection and many discs. What can be the reason when we both have the same premises?

Well, I just checked, we have 802.11g activated and the mode is set to "b+g" (whatever that means) ...
Do you think this is a matter of settings?

well i would buy an 802.11g stick, since it can go up to 54mbps, instead of 11mbps. As for right now, do you have any firewalls on your computer that isnt on your friends?

No, I checked his standard-XP-firewall (which I also use atm due to recent format c) and we both have the same settings. His network-settings are also the same, but there is a "special" menue for box- and internet-settings which you can open via your browser. There are several options and I don´t know the meaning or effect of them. So I hope that someone knows what I can do generally to solve such a problem, because imho it`s obvious that this has to be a matter of the settings.
