So Ive been nagging for a server for some time now. Being a college student, my savings are minimal. I was originaly thinking of saving up and buying a nice server board and expanding it over the years. However the initial cost is still too high for me.
When I got back I realised that I may be able to use the motherboard I got around 3 years ago. ( Gigabyte ga-p35-Ds3L) Originally (and still) I have had a Pentium D but as I looked up the specs for the MB I realize I can go up to a core 2 quad.
My question is do you think this setup would run linux with a VM backend with maybe 3-4 VM's running alongside with mythtv?
I was thinking of using
quad q9550 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115041)
8GB PC2 8500 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104098)
and a 2 TB drive.
I already have a case and power supply and GPU (may end up upgrading the PSU and GPU cause they are cheep and old)
Any suggestions?
