Going to try to build one.

I spent most of the day here and now that I have a bit of knowledge I may be dangerous.

Here are the things I've picked. Feel free to comment. All advice will be seriously considered.

Power Supply: AMS Mercury EPS 550w PP550 3 ES

Motherboard and Processor: ASUS A8N-VM NVIDIA Socket 939 Micro ATX and AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz

Memory: Corsair valueselect 1GB (2x512MB) 184 pin DDR SDRAM dual channel kit system memory

Hard drive: Maxtor Diamond Max 10 6L300RO 300GB 7200 RAM IDE Ultra ATA 133

Burner: Lite-On 16v DVD+/-R DVD Burner w/5x DVD-Ram Write Black ATAPI/E-IDE

Cooler: Ultrafire socket A/754/939 Heatsink and fan

Am I forgetting anything besides a modem? Planning to run Windox XP on it. Anything else I need? Too much? Too little?

Oh, and does everything go together o.k? (Who me? I'm not nervous about this little endevor.;-))

Maybe a case? :P And a video card.

And I don't know about that power supply... Could you link us or tell us the amps on the 12v rail(s)

*edit*

Whoops, I see that one has onboard video...

How much is each part and total, what will you use it for, where do you live (country, this is for places to buy from)

Thanks for responding!

The power supply is at newegg.com. Looking through my notes it is here
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817101108

Total price so far is $572.47, and the parts are coming from newegg.com and/or tiger direct.

Cost of each part breaks down like this:
Power Supply - $88.50 (new egg)
Motherboard and processor - $229.99 (tiger direct)
Hard drive - $108.00 (new egg)
Memory - $66.00 (new egg, I think)
Burner - $39.99 (new egg)
Cooler - $39.99 (tiger direct)

I live in the U.S. - Montana
computermaineak, do you have a recommendation for an alternate DVD-RW?

Do any of you have a suggestion for a case this will all fit in? And a video card?

Thanks a bunch!

edited to answer the usage question.
What will we use it for? My 6-year old daughter will be playing games on it mostly. Yes, games like Elmo's World and Barbie. (for now a any rate.) Other than that I'll use it for keeping homeschool records, finances, email, etc. The reason we want to build something is that we have bought two cheap computers from Wal-mart and the like and they haven't held up. We think that building one will be an easier/cheaper way to get a higher-end machine. And it will be a great school project!

The LiteOn DVDRW has gotten a lot better.
The reason I choose Lite-On is because the Compaq we took apart yesterday had one in it and it had been running for a little over a year, and Praetor's educational thread suggested Lite-On as an option. I just want to get one that will work for a couple of years.

I just did a rebuild into a Raidmax Sagitta case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811156180) and really like it.

It comes with a 450 watt Prescott power supply thats running my system fine (see my rebuild complete thread). Also, the case has a toolless install design and there is plenty of room inside.

Heck, I like it, good price, not too many lights, easy to use, and the reviews I read were generally positive.

Lite-On is OK, Pioneer or NEC are better.

Too much?
It won't hurt, but it is overkill. You don't need to spend that much on a PSU for that sort of system.

Is this PSU a better choice?

My budget is as inexpensively as possible. I'll be buying parts over time, say about 3 months. It'll be mostly for my daughter to use, but my husband has been mentioning the names "Halo" and "Call of Duty" alot lately.

Lithium, thanks for the advise about the upgrade for the processor and video card. Maybe now that I'm not spending $90 on a power supply I can upgrade one or both.
