Good Antivirus

The answer is quite simple. It works! Now that is before pointing out AVG 7.1 a "free" version by Grisoft that has proven it's worth on many occasions for not only viruses but alerting on I-Worms in incoming mail(unknown senders) as well as coming to life after being taken off of the startup list and alerting on a trojan copied in an instant to the drive by an unknown web upon reaching it during a search. Try to avoid free antivirus protection and 'packages' that combine all security features in one like a security suite as different companies have different strengths (e.g.: zonealarm have good firewalls, trendmicro and mcafee have good antivirus, symantec have good emergency backup tools etc etc... I wouldnt recommend Norton as it slows down your pc like its the only thing that owns it. I would recommed Mcafee or trend micro but mcafee just owns it all - I use it too

Well... Having seen and used pretty much all of them...
Avoid Norton and Mcaffee like the plague. They are both absolute crap. PCcillin is a little bit better, but to be honest with you Trend Micro's online scan kills it.
Panda is by far the best paid for one. They have fantastic corporate and consumer products. The only problem with the consumer products is that with Windows XP you need 512MB of RAM or more or it will bog your system down. However, it completely spanks the competition, hands down. I use Businessecure on my network. The admin centre is on the server and it distributes clients to the rest. It is phenomenal.
For a free one, AVG is killer. I love it and have installed it on many computers. It takes up very little resources and has good heuristics.
Panda Activescan is awesome if you want an online virus scan. I use it a lot when I am on site.

I have been useing EZ anti virus for about 3 years and I have not got one virus. I use my pc everyday and it seems to block stuff pretty good. And it seems to not slow my pc down at all.

When looking at the comparison between the Pro and free version seen at http://download.grisoft.cz/softw/70/filedir/presale/cmpsheets/mm_pfp_cmp_us_2.pdf the term "unspecified" was listed there.
Do a scan at Panda and see if it missed any. That's how I evaluate them. People think their antivirus is doing the job until I show them how many it missed.

McAfee is just as much crapola as Norton. Avioding freewares? Gee? Grisoft's "FREE" version updates itself as well as catches a good number of things even specifying what files are infected along with showing where they are located on the drive. Lavasoft's AwAdware SE Personal is a "Freeware" that has become very popular due to it's effectiveness in removing a list of things. Zone Alarm's free version while being limited "passes" leak tests with flying colors. Retail or free no "one" program is ever 100%! Some viruses and malwares require special removal tools after they slip onto your hard drive.
Actually, while Zonealarm Pro performed very well in leaktests, the 'Free Version' performed 'Miserably' - beating only Filesclab and of course, The windows firewall.As you will see by this link, 'Jetico' is not only Free, but one of the best performers.

The reason Jetico is free is that it is still in beta form while still being developed. The personal firewall August 6 beta release can be downloaded from http://www.jetico.com/ I never said that the ZA free version was the best out. But it certainly passed the LEAK TEST testing over the freeware that The_Other_One was pointing out. Leak Test went right through that one.

Apparently AntiVir is unable to scan incoming/outgoing emails or archives stored on the drive or removable media. That doesn't work here. The one thing to really keep in mind is that no one program will ever be able to catch everything. AVG has already proven itself worthwhile here while still being a free version. But you still need more then just one program along having a good firewall in mind.
