Good Brands vs. Bad Brands

well, Dell Inspiron 1150 and 5100, have either motherbaord prblems or hard drive problems, 4get what the problems are exactly. the best quality laptop i think is really good, is the Dell XPS, expensive, but nice, or the alienware, 1, thats if your really wanting 2 spend some cash, probrably little more than $1000 lol.

i have heard good and bad things about lots of things on laptops...
the one brand i haven't heard lots of bad stuff about is Toshiba... that is supposed to be very good... from personal experience, i would suggest to syay away from HP...

Sisters Laptop: HP... screen doesn't work and she has always been gentle with her PC... poorly made baisically... also lots of cheap hardware problems...

My friends laptop (doesn't come here alot... but he has been here... Karjaneth): screen doesn't work often... sometimes goes through spazes... reformates haven't worked properly, reformats don't help him... he can't play medal of honor on it on... to slow and choppy... he was able to play medal of honor when he first bought it on full grpahics... it slowed down over a while (medal of honor) and a reformat didn't fix it...

My other friends laptop is the same as the friend stated above, and has simalare simptoms... also lots of harddrive failures... reformat hasn't been tried yet...

My first friend's unlce works in computer hardware research for a living (he has Praetor-like knowlege... almost) and he had a HP Laptop that had lots of harddisk failure...

My moms laptop: slow... even right after it was purchased...

all of those are HP laptops... i know people with IBMs, and toshibas that don't have problems... i know one person who had a dell and he had problems with it, but having only one bad experience with something doesn't mean it sucks... so i don't know much of dell...

The only thing to be careful of with Dell is that they are becoming increasingly a proprietary company... With that said, their laptops are pretty well constructed. Sony is pretty good, and Toshiba I like a lot because they make quality laptops and at what I think are the most reasonable prices for what you are getting... As for the HPs, I have had a lot of experience with those, and have been pretty impressed in general with their performance. As for brands to stay away from, Gateway is a sinking ship, and I haven't seen anything recently that would change that. So, I would stay away from them, just because you might not be able to get support in the future from the company if they go defunct. Hope that helps! :)

If I purchsed a laptop now, I'd probably go with Toshiba or Asus... I've read some good stuff about Chembook, but I've mostly just looked into one model from them.

That's what I thought...

Toshiba
Sony
Alienware
Asus

I have all heard and read that they are top notch (at least their high end model are) I am planning on purchasing a Laptop to be my main computer. I will need to it be pretty damn powerful because I will be using it for Architectural AutoCAD (and other programs alike) 3D Rendering which these days needs a lot of graphic and processor power.

I'm looking for something 2GHz+, 2MB Memory, 60-80GB Hard Drive, and a POWERFUL Graphics Card.

I'm aiming for $3,000 - $3,100 at the absolute most. That's about all I can afford at this point in time. I'm gonna research the companies people have mentioned.

Please mention more good and bad ones. Thank you.

My best friend's COMPAQ laptop gets burning hot and one day, for no reason at all, the springs or something in the hinge of the screen gave way and now she always has to have it propped behind something for the screen to "stand up" properly. It's 4 years old now and the CD-ROM (and possibly the harddisk too) is dying...

My laptop in the sig will be 2 years old soon and has survived 2 falls, with almost no complications. Well the memory stick slot got a bit dislocated, but it still reads/writes fine.. And the last time I dropped my laptop it fell screen first  but nothing happened, not a scratch. It doesn't get so hot too, unlike my friend's. So now I have quite a high regard for SONY laptops, but they're really expensive. They've got the prettiest screens, though. Better than Toshibas I think ;)

one company not listed there that arguably makes the best laptops is lenovo (used to be ibm thinkpads) but they are also the most expensive. As far as build quality and overall resistance to breaking if dropped or something is the best. I read once where a guy got into a wreck on the interstate and his thinkpad flew a couple hundred feet down the road, only thing that was broken was a usb plug that had a mouse pluged into it before the accident, it still booted fine and everything. Moving on, alienware will have the best gaming laptops (xps is close) as far as hardware, but my friend had a horrible time with one, I've typed out the whole story before, I'll see if I can find it and post a link to it.

for autocad i'd recommend a dell latitude d820... it comes with a duo core processor and for like 180 bucks more you can put a 256MB (up to 512MB with turbocache) quadro gfx card in it (don't remember the specific series number though, sorry)... it's the one i'm considering buying for college and i plan to major in computer engineering so i think it should work for you...

dell laptops are excellent. my uncle has a few older ones with Pentium III's and they are pretty sweet.

i own an hp and it gets very hot, but that is probally because i leave it plugged in all the time. the hp is very good quality, it should be for the 1100 bucks payed for it. not really any major problems with it, other than the cd drive quit on me a few months ago, but i just think that my sister dropped it and now it doesnt work, but aside from that no problems what so ever.
