what are good controls for flight sims
I played the demo of ms flight sim X with the keyboard and it was hell.
what should I get to play it.

At minimum a decent joystick. Look at Logitech's as they make a couple good ones. Look for one that has a twist handle, hat switch, and throttle control and you'll be set for the basics.

If you want a real good setup look into a joystick or yoke, a separate throttle quadrant, and rudder pedals. These three things will make it very realistic.

Saitek rudder pedals
Saitek throttle and joystick
TrackIR head tracker

You have all of those and you will be one happy simmer. Though, I would say a cheap joystick is all that is really NECESSARY.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826102507 those are the controls I have and I love them. They are every bit worth the price, but like most people have said a cheap joy stick is really all you need. Although the more accurate your controls are the more fun you will have playing.

+1 I have them too and I love them. However sometimes the knob underneath my left thumb screws up so I had to put the deadzone on the whole control.

I dont have the X52, but the X45 (i suppose its predecessor, since the layout is exacly the same.)
absolutely love it.

How does the X52 hold up? I had an X36 that lasted forever but I heard the newer ones don't hold up as well.

Honestly, it depends what your flying.

+1

I should have asked what you intend to be flying in my original post.

Are you thinking general aviation, military fighters, commercial.....?

I can completely tailor a setup for you based on what you want to fly.

I have Saitek X52 Pro it's perfect for Space sims and Fighter aircraft also works well with DCS Blackshark chopper simulator. The only thing I dont like is the sockets are cheap and will break easy if you forget to unblug before you move them.
