Good deal?

This guy is selling a Corsair hx520w modular power supply for $50. Is that a good deal? From what I can gather this model was made about 4 years ago. I've never owned Corsair before, hear lot's of good and bad things. I'm sure it beats the POS power supply I have now. TIA.

P.S: I'm eventually planning on getting an ATI 5850, not sure what brand though, and upgrading to Quad Core, probably something that only uses 65-95 watts.

OK, thanks. Should I go with a lower card? The 5850 requires a 500 watt PSU, 25 watts is not a whole lot of headroom.

you should be fine. the card doesnt actually use 500 watts, it uses around 300 watts MAX.

You mean 150W, max, by itself.

His entire system's power consumption is likely to be under/close to 300W, depending on how many hard drives and fans he has.

I have 5 80mm fans, 1 HD and 1 dvd drive, so I'm no where close to 525 watts. So they say the card needs a 500 watt PSU just to cover there butts basically? I guess I can see people getting angry if they said it required a 150 watt unit and then didn't work.

You need at least 40a for the 5850 for a single rail or as they state a psu with the minimum 450 watts. Which you should have a total of 45-46a so for me that is cutting it to close but it should work fine.

Right on, just finishing putting this bad boy in, having modular cables kicks ass. Plus my case lights no longer flicker when under load.
