With that sort of budget, I would go for

intel Q9450 + Zelman 9700
GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4/ DFI LANPARTY DK X48-T2RS/ ASUS P5E Deluxe
ATI HD4870
G.SKILL 2 x 2GB DDR2 1066 F2-8500CL5D-4GBPI
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX/ PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W/ Antec TPQ-850

Q6600 will perform as good as the top end phenom (phenom 9950), but it is cheaper and consume much less power

Also, you can get cheaper intel motherboard, and spend the rest of money on Intel Q9550

Instead of the GeForce 280, you may want to consider a Radeon 4870. AFAIK it has better price-performance ratio, though $400 seems a great deal for the NVIDIA card... it does perform better than the 4870, but if the performance for price matters, you may want to do some research...I'm not sure which one would be better here.

What is a comparable motherboard? I know it sounds lame but i really like the features of that mobo, like the mempipe and surfing the net without booting the computer.... i have always been a amd fanboy so im not much up on the intel chips but im aware they have the edge so what is a good mobo for the Q9550?

wouldn't it allow me an easier path to upgrade keeping the amd since the socket is going to stay AM2+ where as intel is going to a different socket for thier next gen chips?

I have spent about 12 hours reading benchmarks on cards and where the 280 looses its not by much plus with
BFG i can upgrade just by paying the difference in price when the next red team as* spankin' cards come out.;)

The thing with the video cards is true; I'd estimate less than two months before we see a GTX 280 X2 on store shelves.

With regard to other components, an E8k-series CPU will handle games better than a hotter, slower-clocked quad-core chip, and when it comes to hard drives, SATA RAID is the bomb: WD Raptors if your primary concern is speed, Excelstor Jupiters if it's space or money.

And XP is orders of magnitude better than Vista.

Yeah me too ! 12 + hours reading benchmarks on sli xfire and single cards... Ugh. there really is no quick solution but the 4870 does seem like the best $ to performance ratio. as the 260 is not as good but 10$ cheaper, and the 280 is a little better but may 30-50$ more, and there really isn't much of a difference overall I'd just as soon choose a 260 280 or a 4870 depending on your setup.

For gaming quads don't do as well as duals from what I've seen. I'd do what nigouki recommends and get the E8k series CPU thats one thing I'd recommend to anyone
