Good Hdd ?

I think this was answered quite well on the other thread where most are finding Western Digital leading the way with Seagate following immediately behind over other makes. Maxtor had a bad rep for a long time. Some of the newer brands seen out still leave question marks.

I've been using WD drives for over 10yrs. now and never saw one fail yet. So you know which make is the obvious favorite here. Seagate also offers some good warrantys and drive tools to consider. Makes like Hitachi or others are still a little unknown at this point to comment on.

If you want speed look into a WD Raptor, if you want storage look into something like the WD Cavair, either that or seagate.

Kent.

ya i was thinking hitachi and samsung would be a good brand . i think ill go with western digital , but if i see a good buy at Frys ill have to go with Maxtor, i heard its ok and so so.

Where do you live, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean,. Hitachi has been a company since 1910, they even bought IBMs Data Storage Division

You again missed the point there. As I mentioned before WD has been the make of drive used here for a lonnnnggg... time! I've worked with IBM and Seagate droves at times while sticking with WD for personal builds.

most drives will/can last a long time if kept cool. inside a pc, heat is a hard drives worst enemy, and many computer cases aren't designed with much hard drive cooling in mind. thus the drives can really heat up and fail faster.

i've felt hard drives that were running in mid tower cases that felt nearly hot enough to burn.

so, if you invest the few bucks on a hard drive cooler and keep the drive cooled, then most brands of hard drives will work fine for a long amount of time.

With the new Antec Nine Hundred case here to follow the AeroCool model that has a 140mm front intake fan the problem of keeping drive temps down is solved. The new build in progess will see one or maybe two ide drives while seeing the more 4 sata HDs added to that. Between the heat seen on P4 model boards and newer with the additional 12v cpu feed and increased power distribution most now see the need for gaming style cases with that added air flow that also helps with drive temps.
