Good idea?

So I was thinking yesterday about the future of computing, and I thought of something interesting, that will perhaps someday become a reality. Instead of laptops, handhelds, and desktops each having their own processor, RAM, hard drive, etc. etc. do you think that someday they will only be connected to the internet (an extremely fast and advanced one) to supercomputers where everyone has their own hard drive space and all the computing is done by none-portable quantum computers, or something along those lines? This would make sense to me, it would enable everyone more or less to be able to have a relatively cheep computer, one could just pay for the storage space needed and the rest done by taxes, or whatever. Kind of be like paying for cable.
Does anyone else think this is a good idea?
 
it sounds good but there would be too many hackers and viruses.. and with peoples personal info on these hard drives how do they know someones not going through their files?? i think most people would feel more secure having their computers by their side.. well atleast i would anyway

No, bad idea IMO. You think internet security/computer security is bad now? Just imagine if everybodys information was shared on the same "system"...
 
Ok, well beyond hacking (which could in theory be done away with), perhaps it could happen? Or people could have a desktop at home that they connect to. So laptops could be ultra small and relatively secure. Maybe that would work better?
 
As long as there are people with computers, and people who bad intentions, there will be hackers. They aren't going anywhere... We may be able to crack down on a lot of it, but there will always be people out there trying to break into peoples stuff. And if everybody was on the same system, there would only be more of it because in theory it would be easier to steal information.

I see what youre getting at, I don't see it happening anytime soon though, mainly for security reasons.

i can only imagine the chaos if a server went down which was supplying a service to a few hundred or thousand people:P
 
Well now I'm talking about the same thing, sort of, except that instead of one centralized super computer, each person would just have a very nice computer at their house that their laptop or handheld would connect to to... work. So no need for processor RAM and such, only battery and internet connection. It seems like that would be just as secure as now? I mean, Mac has something like that where you can access data from any computer on your network from the internet, this would just be an expanded version of that.

so u mean have a laptop that uses a wireless connection that provides it ram and processor and stuff rather than have it inside the actual laptop? haha i confuse easy:(
 
Well first of all, there are systems that sort of run on that principle now.

2nd, the PDA or hand held would have to be more than just a battery with internet connection. There has to be something to process the information coming in.

3rd, I don't think the risk of security is limiting this idea. I think its our lack of widespread high speed wireless internet. I don't think it would be possible, or pleasant for that matter, to run an entire OS from a present day Wi-Fi connection.

4th, this would all work out assuming that we can afford high powered super computers to sit at our house to only be accessed by us remotely.
 
bigsaucybob makes good points, but I still think security plays a huge role in technology like this. Would you seriously want to put your credit card information into your computer if somebody could take it? It happens.... it happens today. It'll happen tomorrow, and it'll happen 5 years from now. I would not trust something like that with my personal information, unless it had proper security. Talk to any IT professional and ask them what their #1 priority is when they work. Well, obviously the first thing would be to make sure everything is actually running properly, but besides that... security. Plain and simple.

O no doubt, I completely agree. I was just saying, before we can even worry about security, there needs to be a connection made. And like you said, there will always be a security threat. I am sure a few years ago, when Wi-Fi was new, everyone said they didn't feel safe putting their info through the air. Today, its still a threat but look how big its become.
 
it is not going to happen or else newegg will go out of business :) system builders will go out of business or will not be able to built computers anymore :)

there will be no customize computers and benchmarks because everyone's basically using the same crap :)

Ok, 1st point: Ok.
2nd: A very simple one maybe, or none at all depending on future innovations.
3rd: I'm sure at the pace we're going most places in the world will someday have very fast and consistent wireless internet. I'm not saying this would at all be for current technology.
4th: Soon, I think we will have computers that can be constituted as "super computers" in most every household, like how most houses have PCs right now. 30 years ago, that would have seemed an amazing feet. Same principle.
