Good password bypass for old XP laptop?

I got an old Compaq Presario laptop that has Windows XP on it and after trying to boot it up, I noticed it's blocked with a password. This is an old work laptop I got for free from a friend. What's a good way to bypass a password? Would I need some software on a USB flash drive? If the flash drive way is my only option is there a good free software out there that's safe to download that doesn't contain adware or browser hijackers or other sneaky unwanted software?

Ummm, unless a moderator approves me speaking on the topic I don't know if this goes against forum rules. However the process is relatively easy on XP machines.

I finally got around to bypassing the laptop. Looks like I had no choice but to wipe it and do a fresh install of XP. Seems to work like new now. The thing was hardly ever used. It was sitting in an office closet in a box since 2006. Had to choose an alternate firewall if I want to browse the web since windows firewall is no longer supported for XP. Seem to play my old games that won't work with 7 nicely although some games are slow because of the low RAM.

If you had done a quick Google you would have found plenty of methods to remove a password on XP.
