Good Turn Based Games

Hi all..

Just looking for a new (well new to me lol) turn based game to play...

Something along the lines of Total War series or the Civilization series etc?

Any suggestions.

Turn Based strategy? Try Heroes of Might and Magic, III was the best but it's old, I heard the new ones weren't as good and theones before III are... not quite as enjoyable, so.

What era are you looking at anyways? Newer games, or is oldschool alright?

Any era lol as long as its good.

Ive played let me see...

All the Civ's and a few of the off shoots like Colonization etc
All of the Total Wars
Conquest of the New World

Um I cant remember anymore at the moment lol.

oldies but goodies

XCOM

Fallout 1 & 2

Commandos (though it is real time not turn based)

Axis and Allies the computer game version

Panzer General

Some of the more intensive games of the past are the entire Master of Orion series...

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a very good one as said above, and I'd have to agree that 5 in particular is not very good at all... It seems to me that the turn-based genre has almost died out completely, other than the Civ series.

Some other good games along the same lines although not really turn based are:

Age of Empires 3
Sins of a Solar Empire & the expansion Entrenchment (highly recommended)
Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth 2 (highly recommended)
Starcraft (a must-play classic, with the sequel coming out in about 2.5 - 3 months)

yeah ive played starcraft and the age of empires lol...

Although ive never played Heros of might and magic... May give that a go..

+1 it's on steam for super cheap and it is a badass game, it took me awhile to get used to at first because it has a fairly steep learning curve, but once you really get in to the game it is effing awesome.

Oh crap, I had no idea they had this on steam. Well, there is yet another game I gotta buy. Seems you can get every release of the game for only $15.00, which would be like 3 or 4 full games.

Yeah, a while ago they had them on sale and I got every release for $5 :D I couldn't get the newer ones to run very well, but xcom and terror from the deep have dosbox and run perfectly.

XCOM, was that the game where you moved dudes with guns and shot aliens and then aliens try to kill you and blah blah... anyways, if that's the game I'm thinking of and you like it, you might want to try PaybackTime 2, it's currently public domain (the game's free and the source has been released), it has no campaign modes and is more multiplayer-oriented but gameplay is more or less the same nonetheless.

I think these are real time strategies not turn based...right...?

no, RTS games are in real time, hence the real time strategy. C&C, warcraft and settlers are good examples of them, you don't have to end your turn, you don't have to wait for others, you don't have a number of squares that you can move per turn etc etc, it is a non-stop stream of gaming, in turn based games, you do have the turns, the waiting for others.

If it hadn't already been said, I'd have been right in there recomending xcom, such a fun series of games, and dirt cheap now too :D

I'll give a thumbs up to heroes of might and magic too. I've played 3, 4 and 5 and enjoyed them all.
