good unlocks for beginners?

When your main gun runs out of ammo, use the pistol.

If all else fails, use the pistol.

and sniping is loads of fun in COD4!
 
Start w the m16, and mp5, ALOT depends on the map, i dont snipe until i get both claymore and Iron lungs(longer holding breath)just not worth it to me, once u work your way up, i use Stopping power for alot of my guns, post if u wud like anymore tips or i will if i remember anymore
 
make a turbo controller like i did, then start flooding the town you live in with them?
P.S. its crazy with a 50 cal.
 
turn on martydom when friendly fire is on. you'll get alot of praise from the rest of your team :D
 
the only guns you really see in competitive play are:
ak-47 stock
ak74u stock
m40 acog or stock
and the occasional m4 or mp5
that said for a n00b your can't go wrong with an m249
 
if you try hard enough there are almost sniping spots for every map, however, maybe like one or two maps arent good for sniping, i can go strictly sniper, or assualt or mp5/ak47u,
