Google OS?

Well, I'm getting a new job where I sit at a desk and check people into a dorm until 6am, so I'm in need of a laptop.

The one I chose is $75 with a 1.8 Ghz pentium 4 and 1 Gb of RAM. Yeah.

So I'm in need of a very light OS. If all else fails, I'm gonna go with XP and strip it down. The only thing I'm gonna be using it for is Internet. Any experience with the Google OS? I love Google Chrome and was wondering if it was good or I should just stick with XP. Thanks.

You could use pretty much whatever OS you wanted to if all you want to do is surf the web. I have a laptop with a 2.3ghz P4 and 768M of RAM that runs both Win XP Pro and Ubuntu 11.04 effortlessly.

I haven't tried Chrome OS so can't comment on it but both XP and Ubuntu are certainly viable choices.

Chrome OS is not released tothe general public yet.

I would suggest a Linux OS, unless you are going to be using an app that uses Silverlight (Netflix, some web radios, etc), in which case you will need a windows OS. 7 32 bit would be good if you need that (XP is nearing the End of Support date).

Chrome OS is still in closed beta, and from what I read it will be similar to iOS and is built for netbooks, so it will probably be very light weight.

The newest version of Ubuntu has got some eye candy in it, your machine may not run it that well. I would suggest a light weight distro of Linux that is built for just web surfing and the like, or if you got a license of XP.

That is the one thing I hate about Linux. All these speciality micro distros that pop up and are never properly updated or maintained. My opinion is go with one of the major distros:

Redhat, SuSe, Debian, Ubuntu, or Unix ones like BSD

That way you know you will always have support since they are constantly being worked on and updated.

google might aswell dump chrome no one wants it, it has taken so disgracefully long.

Lol, I really don't think that two years is that long of a development period for the first iteration of completely new OS. We should hear some news soon about a definite launch date, there's a Google conference going on right now where it's expected to be announced.

Google is just as secretive, if not more than Apple. Trust me, we got the Google Fiber in my city. I have seen utility trucks laying fiber for almost a year all over the city, and I thought it was just AT&T. Then all the sudden out of the blue 5 satellite trucks, countless news crews, the mayor, the governor, and other politicians show up at my work. They made no announcements and would not tell anyone. I had to park like 5 blocks away and secret service had to "check me out," before I could go into my office, all for the announcement about Google Fiber in our area.

They kept that locked down tight for almost a year, and no one knew. That is pretty touch to do when you are a huge company like google and analysts are watching every move you make.

I would not be surprised if they just release it all of the sudden out the blue soon.

Well at some point although to many this measures seem a little extreme think about the money... the sum when it comes to these kind of things is enormous

If you are going to be using the laptop just for the internet, just install XP on it and put the IE or any other browser to run on Windows OS startup in the fullscreen mode and that's it...
