Google redirect virus

Help! I think one of our computers has been infected with this virus. I ran a full computer scan with Charter's Internet Security (F-Secure), but it showed nothing. I tried to run the Hijack This program in Safe Mode (Hijack This was already on the computer), but I couldn't get it to run. Of course, downloading it from online, on that computer, is not possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've heard this is a particularly nasty virus. I'd sure appreciate some advice on how to get rid of it.

Wait. I think this is a google redirect virus. Let me explain it's behavior. Anytime we try to navigate away from a page, it directs us back to the home page, which is Google. Maybe that will help.
 
It doesn't sound like a Google redirect, but some kind of issue. A redirect redirects your Google searches, so that's not the case here.

Start here and see where it gets you. John can help you more afterwards.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.



Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Vista and Windows 7 users must right click on the hijackthis icon and click on run as. If the run as option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on the icon to get it to appear.


Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Alright, here it is in all its glory. You wouldn't believe what I had to do to get this done. Since I couldn't download the programs, I had to download them to another computer and save them on a flash drive. Then I couldn't open up programs by double-clicking, right-clicking and clicking open or explore, and most of the time, "run as" wouldn't work either. I had to access it through the search box. I also had to save the Hijack This file to a flash drive and open it on another computer.

Did you run MalwareBytes at all? Try running that first and see what happens. Then post another HijackThis log.
 
I need you to post a special log from hijackthis. Open hijackthis, click on open misc tools section, click on open uninstall manager, click on save list and save it. Then copy and paste the contents back here.

What browser is being used on this system? I don't see anything that stands out that may cause this. And technically this isn't called a google redirect issue. A redirect issue is when you search for something and click on a link and it takes you to some weird website or ad and not your true intention. This may just be a browser issue. If its chrome, just uninstall and reinstall. If IE then you can go to the advanced tab and reset it back to defaults, press both resets buttons on the advanced tab.
 
Okay, tried it, John. It didn't seem to work. Let me elaborate on the computer's behavior and that may shed some light on it. We're using IE. The Google search page is our home page. When I type "computer forum" and hit enter, it goes to the search page. I click the hyperlink for our forum, it will (sometimes) briefly show our home page, then go to the computer forum. When I click on the "desktop" category, it goes back to the home page.

Sometimes, when I click on the hyperlink on the search page, it will go back to the home page. Sometimes when I click on the "desktop" category, it will go back to the search page.

I tried this in Chrome as well. In Chrome, I typed in "computer forum", then clicked the hyperlink on the search page and it went back to the home page.

Any insights, for this vexing problem, would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
 
Try this but I doubt it will find anything.

Please download and run TDSSkiller

When the program opens, click on the start scan button.

TDSSKiller will now scan your computer for the TDSS infection. When the scan has finished it will display a result screen stating whether or not the infection was found on your computer. If it was found it will display a screen similar to the one below.

To remove the infection simply click on the Continue button and TDSSKiller will attempt to clean the infection.

When it has finished cleaning the infection you will see a report stating whether or not it was successful as shown below.

If the log says will be cured after reboot, please reboot the system by pressing the reboot now button.

After running there will be a log that will be located at the root of your c:\ drive labeled tdsskiller with a series of numbers after it. Please open the log and copy and paste it back here.
 
Well, I ran the program. It scanned 341 files and found no threats. I'm really confused as to what is going on. I have to download these things from the laptop (that I'm using now), and then, instead of just double-clicking or right-clicking and going to open, I have to go to "My computer", right-click the icon and select "search". I can only open the file from the search box.

Any ideas? I'm totally lost on this one.

Do you have the xp install cd? If so, put it in the cd drive, click on start, click on run type sfc /scannow hit enter. This will replace any corrupt system files if it finds any. Only other solution would be to do a system restore back to a day when it was working fine.
 
Sorry this has taken so long for me to get back. We did a system restore (though it didn't want us to do so - but I could do it in safe mode). That didn't help. The only other option (since my wife purchased this at Walmart), I think, is to use the HP Restore Disks (a set of 10) to redo the computer. If you have any other suggestions than that, please let me know.

Embarrassing Update

I appreciate everyone's help on this problem. But a great lesson has been learned here. It turns out that all of these problems ended up being caused by the mouse.
