I made a post in the hard drive section a while ago asking about having a hard drive in a car, well I got that situation pretty well figured out but now heres what im stuck on... Well first off, im basically puting a computer in a car... and I want to have a few buttons on the steering wheel of the car do certain things IE change songs in windows media, raise/ lower theing like that? I don't want it to have to come to me rigging up volume, etc. So i want them to basically be like "hot keys" I also still want to have a normal keyboard to use... Anyone got any ideas on how I could do this so i don't have to wire some minimatic pneumatic rams to push actual keys on a keyboard! :P

aha, Re read the last part of my post now, it was suppose to be worded that way, I didn't proof read because the pizza I ordered came right after I typed my post. The buttons on the steering wheel are going to have to do certain things so Im thinking if I need to re wire something ill need a whole keyboard, which wastes allot of space... Im kinda stumped...

Ok say I get something like this this and hide it under the dash... Is there anyway I could wire "buttons" on the steering wheel to "activate" certain "keys" on that keyboard? Ive never looked "in" a keyboard... IDK if theres a way I can wire into one for certain keys....

I still think a number pad would work, but yeah, that would work too. It might be difficult to but I'm sure you could rewire them somehow

Hmmm I'd have to make each button on the steering wheel activate "ctrl" along with the required hot key... Im guessing ill need ctrl p for play, ctrl f for next, ctrl b for back, and that should be all... I just want to be able to use the computer as a audio player in the cars stereo system without having to "get on" the computer. Alls ill have to do is open windows media and pick a playist.

I have seen numberpads that are totally generic, so I will assume there is some software that allows you to specify what key does what(perhaps even a combination)

Another idea that just hit me, ever thought about just using some sort of remote? :P I have an RF remote so you don't have to point it to any receiver(works within 30' of the unit) and it totally programmable, though it's a bit limited. I'm sure there are better ones out there for you're setup, but tis a suggestion

Do they make some sort of remote for computers or would i have to wire something up? If there are ones for computers, do you have ny links or words i should search google for? Im kinda new to this, sorry...

i would just put a keyboard inbetween the passenger/driver seats.
OR get a wireless keyboard and put it on the dashboard! thats what i would do though... just an idea.
