For legal usage, copper wire and a pringles can has a great signal boost(especially for those with large houses or large backyards), there is alot more physics to it than just getting a soup can and throwing a USB dongle in it.
Another old trick was on the WRT54G style routers was to make tin foil parabolic reflectors, place them over the antennas, and point them at directions where signal is weak.
Or you could just be like me and run 100% ethernet with no wireless
