ok how come is it that most decent computers are around 500-600 bucks but compaqs are so cheap...im looking at theyre site and the price is alot less with the same processors and stuff...is something wrong with compaqs???

I've never had any problems from my old compaqs, though I think they went downhill after HP bought them.

Processor speed and HDD size isn't all that counts.

For a custom PC, you're concerned about ALL corners of performance. Not just "GHz".

With a Compaq, you're getting a cheap motherboard that is virtually featureless, no overclocking, no tweaking, nothing. You're also probably gettin integrated video, which means no gaming or good multimedia support. If they do specify a specific graphics card, it is again probably featureless and un-tweakable.
HDD is probably an off-brand, only meant for large capacity and not speed.
RAM is going to be off-brand, again, only meant for capacity. Timings are going to be crap, bandwidth is going to be crap.
Case and PSU are going to look semi-decent on the outside at best. Case quality is OK, but PSU quality is terrible. Low amps, bad cooling, probably short life.
Etc.

Wth a custom PC, you get more opportunity for flexibility in tweaking, overclocking, etc. Every piece of the computer is going to be high quality (assuming you buy the right parts lol).

None of that matters though if you just want an internet capable, e-mail, AIM, school/work, based computer. A simple Compaq/HP Desktop with a warranty will suit you fine if that's all you need.
(I'm on a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop right now :P)

Then again when you buy a compaq or any oem really you're not paying for performance (whether you get it or not), youre paying for the convenience and warranty

ok then ill probly customize, but like someone up there said "compaq went down since HP bought them"...are u saying HP's are bad too???cuz theyre pretty cheap too.

Addressed...

im just saying, all of the compaqs i've had were before HP bought them and now a lot of people are complaining about them.
but you almost never see an OEM comp brand with decent PSUs...

That's pretty broad of a statement and arguably incorrect: OEMs dont want to be replacing boxes all the time so they ship a PSU that's generally more than acceptable for the platform as shipped ... people start running into problems only when they want to upgrade (but that's the point, the OEM doesnt want you to upgrade....they want you to buy a new one)
