Got Half Life 2 From steam and Having Problems

Well I installed everything of half life 2 and for the first 3 chapters into the game it worked beautifully, but when i get passed the part of jumping the big dam fps on it and everything else looks like crap. Heres my pc specs

Intel core i7 3770(3.40ghz)
6 Gb DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT640/1 GB
Windows 8 64Bit
1 TB HDD

(also I dont have the latest DirectX, which im currently trying to find)
 
Okay this explains it. Half Life 2 isn't a DX11 game so it doesn't matter (you should still be able to run it fine though). You might have an issue with the game itself.

Try this:
Open your steam library and right click Half Life 2. Choose Properties and then go under the Local Files tab. Click on "Verify integrity of game cache". See if that works. If not, try deleting the game and downloading it again.
 
If you want nice graphics for HL2 (not that the stock ones are bad) you could download the Cinematic Mod. It's an overlay with new textures, sounds, music, etc.

The ISO files are huge though so the best way to download them is through the torrent links posted on the site.
 
They're higher quality skins and textures. It makes the game more interesting (not that it isn't already interesting and awesome).
