Got me a new laptop

So after my old Dell laptop AND my Acer netbook failed (returning the netbook), I finally bit the bullet and ordered myself a Lenovo Thinkpad X201. Reviews on the internet says that it's has rock solid construction (magnesium roll cage + lid) and uses steel hinges. Specs are as follows

Intel Core i3 390m 2.66ghz dual core CPU
2GB DDR3 memory (going to upgrade to 4GB when it arrives)
250 GB 5400 rpm hard drive
12.1' 1280 x 800 LED backlit display
Webcam + finger printer scanner
9 cell 94 watt-hr battery (up to 11 hours of battery life, generally around 7 hrs)

It cost me a total of about $980 on Lenovo's website and it's going to arrive 2 weeks. The 12.1' form factor is small enough for me to throw in my backpack and take to classes. The 7+hr battery life allows me to bring it around with me all day without needing a charger. So basically it's the perfect college laptop! I'll post some pictures and a quick review when I get it!

Here's a generic picture of it:

it will work well. i had a Toshiba 17" and ya needed a suitcase to carry around. my daughter traded for it a intel build a couple years ago. now i have a asus Eee and works for me. no, not for school. im retired.

looks nice...r yu using it only for papers/projects?
And its a good idea to upgrade to 4GB ... :)

Basically yeah, I have a desktop for more heavy duty applications. The laptop is basically for taking notes, bringing to class and the library, and watching netflix in bed.

7+ Hr Battery? I envy you. My last laptops battery life was about 2 hrs it was awful.

Yep i upgraded to the largest capacity battery. The 9 cell battery has a capacity of 94 watt-hr, and the laptop only draws about 10-13 watts of power for browsing internet or running MS word. My last laptop only had a 1:30 battery life...it was dreadful.

you should of did a little research befor you bought that laptop for a 1,000.i just bought a Lenovo a week ago from newegg which was under 500,around the same specs. your cpu is better, but mine came with 4gb ram with 320gb hdd.the one i bought would be perfect for what you need it for, would of saved you 500.

There's SUCH a big difference between the two laptops. And I don't see how it could be perfect for my needs.

1) You are comparing a lenovo G series Essntials laptop to a ThinkPad. There is a night and day difference between the two lines of products. The Essentials line is consumer grade while the ThinkPad line is built to the highest standards of business laptops. For example, thinkpads have internal roll cages protecting the laptop from falls, shock absorbing hard drives that automatically stop when it senses that the laptop is falling, magnesium panels and lids to prevent flexing, and so on. These features are all important because I am looking for a laptop to throw in my backpack and go.

2) Yours has a 15.6" screen mine is 12.1" screen, portability is a must for me so 15.6" is too big. Also 5.73 lbs is a lot heavier than 3.8 lbs.

3) The laptop you linked has an advertised "up to 4 hours of batteries". The x201 has an advertised "up to 11.5 hours of batteries". Once again I bought this laptop partially because of it's extended battery life. I want to be able to last an entire day of class without having to run around a classroom looking for electric sockets.

That laptop may have been a great buy for you but would have been horrible for me. It doesn't really fit my purpose. I needed an ultraportable with enough horse power to do any non-gaming things I throw at it and have an amazing battery life. Trust me I did plenty of research ahead of hand. I almost bought a T410 (14.1" screen, shorter battery life) but ultimately decided against it due to it's extra weight. The x201 is the perfect laptop for me.

dude, im not saying thats a bad laptop or anything, its great.im just saying i got almost equal performance for half the price.yeah i know you got the "ThinkPad line which is built to the highest standards of business laptops"bla bla bla. i really think all them extra safety features are a gimmick anyways.how bout you tester out?put it on your table and knock her off,oh make sure its a tile/ or hard wood floor,we'll se how them standards play out.GL

I know, it's just like the Macbooks. They're more expensive but they also include a lot of other useful features that a regular $500 laptop doesn't have.

And no I'm not going to purposely drop my brand new laptop (when it comes) onto the ground. However, other people have done it before. Here's two videos.
