Gparted not working

I finished a new computer, and was unable to get the full capacity of my hd. Someone on this forum suggested i use Gparted to expand the primary, worked great. It also worked on my laptop. However i have one more computer, all i did was reformat, and i can only get 127gb, but i cant get this Gparted program to work. I went into the bios and set boot from cd. it looks like its about to work, but i get error messages when it begins. Can anyone help out with this?
 
Are you changing any setting when booting up with the cd-r while GParted is loading? If you saw a good burn to disk then simply press the enter/return key at each prompt about 4 while it loads to default main gui.

If you change maps, change the setting from 24 to 32bit, or change the screen resolution without a large monitor to see everything fit onto the screen then you have to reboot it all over again. The 24bit is there since this a Linux tool. The default 1024x768 resolution keeps the drive selector button found on the right of the menu bar visible onscreen.

Another thing to look at would be the disk itself to see if that got scratched up or simply covered with finger prints. The optical on this other system may not be fully reading the disk itself. ill provide the exact error message tomorrow. I beleive it is a loading error, because it wont load from cd it loads from something else i am not familiar with. i get to the screen where it asks for extra boot options, i elect to skip extra boot options, then i get about a 15 line error message. Another thing, when i put the cd in other computers, i see the Gparted logo at th start, but int this computer i only see a baige background. I know these clues suck, but any suggestions are appreciated.
 
Is this being seen on an old system like 4-5yrs. old or one more recent? With some older optical drives they were fussy about what brand as well as type of disk could be read fully.

The beige is the actual default color for the 0.3.3.0 release if you know which one you are using there. And that sounds like it is struggling to load while the optical is the problem. That may simply need a lens cleaning if the lazer isn't failing or rejecting the media used for the live cd.

you could be right. This cd works on every other computer, but this is not my oldest computer. It tries to load from "dev/hda" whatever that means. I think it should load from cd or something right?
 
You will want the live for cd version. You will have to scroll down about half way down the page at the link here for the 0.3.3.0 and 0.3.2.0 platform independent versions while some report having been able to resize NTFS partitions with the latest release seen at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828

Another problem could be the program you use for burning. I ran into when first trying out the earlier no longer releases where BurnOn's free version always seems to work out well for seeing the iso burned to a bootable cd-r. http://www.burnworld.com/burnoncddvd/

Know anyone running Vista? Simply boot with the installation disk if you have a dvd drive on that system until the first splash screen and look for the repair tools button. Vista can now resize and format new partitions as well as create and delete them. I still use GParted for the new version as well as XP however.

I dont recall if i have a live cd, but i do Know it is 3.3.0, and it is on a CD-R. I like the vista idea, ill look to see if i know someone with it.

If the system lacks a dvd player or burner it won't work since Vista is now seen on dvd not cd due to it's larger size. Another option would be to simply place the hard drive in one of the other systems or swap optical drives out where GParted will then work for this. Once expanded you simply reinstall the HD or simply leave a better optical drive in.

I took the dvd drive from another computer and connected it to this one. Gparted then worked, however my computer will no longer boot from the HD. Is it possible i may have deleted it by using the software wrong. Or is it possible i shouldnt have used the dvd drive, then took it off. Also, my other computer has a dvd drive, i don't know why it wouldnt read it.

when i boot from hd i get a black screen with a white flashing line, does this indicate i screwed up. I hope not becuase this was already the 2nd time i reinstalled windows and ALL my software and files.
 
actually, i put the Gparted cd in again and noticed some of the hd space on the bar is beige, i didn't realize that meant thats the portion that was used, meaning i dont think i deleted evertything, however i still cant start my computer. Anyone have any ideas. I rememer the last time i used it a blue screen pops up and shows me the partition expanding, not this time however.
 
You may have actually shrunk the OS primary there rather then expanding it. The only time I see a flashing cursor and nothing else is simply when setting a second storage drive as the default boot device since that lacks any boot information as well as OS.

If you saw a long process before completion that would be the time involved for reducing the size rather then simply increasing it. With a lack of space then for the paging file or corruption of boot information that can no longer be read.

The other thought is that the current drive on that system is in need of replacement! On two totally different systems with two different age and brands of drives GParted could delete but not create a new primary. You couid read from each but no longer write to them which could very well be what you are seeing there.
 
Problem solved. Once i installed the service packs everything worked. Someone already told me SP1 fixes this issue, but i thought they meant it did it automatically, i got the service packs and the HD was still 137gb so i thought that person was wrong. Next time i know, i need at least SP1 before i can expand the primary partition.
 
Logical Block Addressing SP2 would be far better at this late date with SP3 on the way soon for XP. Almost everything now requires SP2 be installed. SP3 will see everything released except IE 7 since SP2 came out in November 2004. Fortunately that will be in one larger download when available.
