GPT Protective Partitions

Hey everyone, im in a really sticky place!

I had to re-build my server for various reasons and now im stuck.

I have around 200Gb of data of a hard disk that worked fine before the re-build however now i have re-installed win 2k3 server it claims that the disk is now a GPT Protective Partition.

I can find very little information online about this let alone how to get my data back.

Please help!

Ok, i have managed to get the data back.

I was panicking slightly before and have spent ages trying to get the stuff back. However i needed to get my server back up and running and so i continued with the install. When i put Win2k3 SP2 on and re-booted it could read the disk again.

I can stop sweating again now.

Even though its now fixed, is there anyone out there who has an explaination to what happened, just for curiousities sake and future reference?

Thanx!

Yea i found that article but doesnt exactly explain what happened. It has only two sentences on the subject:

"Indicates that the volume is a GUID partition table (GPT) disk. The GPT protective partition contains the protective MBR to prevent disk utilities that are not compatible with GPT disks from accidentally destroying GPT partitions."

Thanx anyway

Essentially the partition was configured to be limited access only and after SP2 that was undone ... as for why? I got nothin ... never had that problem myself;
